I’ve already decided to skip Pedal Thru the Pines, a wonderful hilly ride through some state parks near Bastrop, Texas this weekend. It would kill me to miss more. So for now, Bike Noob is out of the saddle. I’m pretty grumpy, …
For the first time in a long time I was able to ride my Raleigh M800 after work tonight. The temperature made it to 64 degrees and the sun was still up but fading over the horizon. The spongy part came about on the return when I noticed my front tire was losing air. I did make it home before all of the air was lost. I thought it was a puncture of some kind but when I inspected the tube I could not find one. Resorting to the water test I found the leak in the metal Presta stem where the threads begin below where the cap seats when you tighten it down. I have never had a tube fail in this manner. I usually have a spare tube but I must have used it last year so I will have to buy one tomorrow.
The statistics for the ride:
miles = 15.05
time = 1:12:32
average speed = 12.4
max speed = 19.0
ascending = 177 ft, descending = 183
no cadence since I do not have a sensor on this bike

Math Has Bike: Us Vs. Gary Fisher
by Math
Five seconds into Saturday morning’s ride, about 20 feet away from cycling legend Gary Fisher, I fell flat on my face. A small cheer went up among the sizable crowd of riders, celebrating my hilarious failure. “Somebody had to be the first” they said, almost in unison. I’d taken a symbolic hit for the team, apparently, so I didn’t feel all that embarrassed by it–I just got up and brushed myself off. I’m still getting used to these damned clip-on shoes. …
