About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A Look Back at the Week’s Bike Rides

Texbiker.net Posted on March 26, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 26, 2023

The last full week of March I was on a bike 5 of the 7 days. Monday I rode Zwift. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday I rode outside. Thinking the winter weather has paused I didn’t renew my Zwift monthly subscription. Sunday’s weather after church included a light mist keeping me indoors but not able to ride Zwift since the subscription had ended. I rode 164.87 miles and closing in on my 650 mile goal for March with 569.8 miles. The weather for the coming week looks favorable for more road rides and reaching my goal.

I rode three different bikes: Blue Norcross AL for Zwift; Cervelo Caledonia Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The Lynskey Helix carried me on Wednesday.

The average road ride distance was 36.1 miles.

Some highlights were the tiny trucks on Thursday and the girls playing cellos at their lemonade cookie stand on Saturday. The YouTube videos show these. You can see the week’s videos at my channel.

Year to date miles for 2023 continues to lead 2011 through 2022.

Guys. This is legit venue. Love the Mexican / country singer Friday night. The wind was borderline ?? ? 3 flats. A dead rear derailleur so I was single speed for the last 20 miles. This course (without the wind) is THE BEST gravel course in Texas. Hands down. Thanks David King !!!!!!

Felt pretty damn good 1 week post 220.

Coastal Bend 11-year-old with genetic disorder looking to get an adaptive bike

By: Javier Guerra | www.kristv.com

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — 11 -year old Zoey Rodriguez is ready for a bike ride with a big smile.

Her mother Stephanie Rodriguez said for Zoey, riding a bike on her own can prove to be a bit challenging because she has a rare genetic disorder.

"Zoey has Pallister Killian Syndrome, she was born with it and we discovered it when she was about two months old," Stephanie said. "For her it means, she has nocturnal seizures, she has an intellectual disability, a developmental delay, she has some really cool color on her skin, she has some hypotonia — which is low muscle tone." Stephanie said.

Both Zoey and Stephanie love to bike together, but Zoey is getting a little big for her seat. …

Reversed A Route, 2 Girls Playing Cellos And Selling Lemonade

Texbiker.net Posted on March 25, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 25, 2023

The weather was too good to wait after watching the Volta a Catalunya race from Spain so I put it on pause and got ready to ride. Last night I thought it might time to ride to Liberty County on FM 1960 but then I remembered the road construction on FM 2100 north of FM 1960 in Huffman. So I scratched that route and instead chose the Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Walden route. This route is a variation of the Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman one. Today’s ride reversed going through Walden until the return from Ramsey Road and Huffman instead of the reverse. The distance is the same just not in the same order. According to SportTracks I’ve only rode the Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Walden route one time before on October 10, 2020, which surprises me. That ride was 4 miles shorter than today’s 40.21 miles. The difference is in the early part of the ride.

Earlier in the week I thought about riding in Simonton TX but changed my mind because the forecast showed cooler temperatures than I prefer. I checked this morning and it was about 58 which wasn’t quite as cool as the forecast so I could’ve gone there. Here the weather was much warmer when I rolled out at 10:20 AM. No need for an extra warm kit. I wore shorts, long sleeve poly T-shirt and a short sleeve Texbiker jersey. It was a good choice. Weather for my ride: start 75 degrees, humidity 39%, dew point 48, fair, wind NW 7 mph; finish 81 degrees, 25% humidity, dew point 42, fair, wind N 10 mph.

I wasn’t sure if I would see other cyclists starting when I did but I saw several along the route starting on Kings River Drive on the way to Ramsey Road. The next pair was on Old Atascocita Road as I rode east and later on the way back to FM 2100 two more passed going east.

Yesterday i goofed off and didn’t ride outside or inside. The weather was dreary and I had a new computer to play with. My legs rested up and today with the great weather and light wind they powered me along nicely. Most of the ride I used the 35×13 gears and only shifted the rear derailleur 31 times. Most of those were for stops. The charts from my AXS.SRAM.com ride report.

At the Ramsey Road bridge I stopped for a few minutes to enjoy the weather and serene silence out in the country and took these photos. Like those purple gates. The sign says law enforcement is watching the property.

Almost at the end of the ride in Hunters Ridge I saw these 2 young girls selling lemonade and cookies with a twist, playing their cellos. You can hear them in the video. While I was there two people stopped.

Video: Bike club in Cypress upset over closure of unauthorized trails; Developer says there are ‘safety and liability’ concerns

Deven Clarke | www.click2houston.com

A group of people who live in the Bridgeland community in the Cypress area are now calling out the developer. They say the Howard Hughes Cooperation, which owns the land, has started prohibiting access to areas they used to mountain bike on, without any explanation.

The area is along Cypress Creek.

Many of the people who built and use the trails are part of the Brigeland Mountain Bike Trails Club.

You can’t see the trails they carved out on the area map, and The Howard Hughes Corporation says there’s a good reason.

Howard Hughes Corporation representatives say that particular land is not meant to be open to the public and those who go there are trespassing, stating that those areas are unsafe.

The controversial trails tucked away in …

Video: City of College Station takes next steps on separated bicycle lane project

By Tyler Hoskins | www.kbtx.com

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Earlier this month, College Station took the next steps on its separated bicycle lane project.

On March 9, College Station City Council awarded a $235,000 design contract for the project. The project will create a physical barrier that separates bicycles from the roadway on George Bush Drive from Texas Avenue to Wellborn Road. According to officials, the goal is to make it safer for cyclists on the road.

The city was also provided a $1 million grant from TXDOT through a Transportation Alternative Programs fund, which covers 80% of the cost, Susan Monnat, senior project manager for the City of College Station, said.

“It’s a great benefit to the city and the residents to be able to really utilize 80%, with an 80-20 split we’re spending 20% and then …

City of Longview seeks $12M grant to complete trail system

By Yoleyne Romero | www.news-journal.com

The city of Longview will apply for a $12 million grant that would complete its extensive trail system.

Laura Hill, the city’s Grant and Human Services director, talked to the City Council during its Thursday meeting about the future of Longview’s trail system.

"The U.S. Department of Transportation issued a call for projects, and we have applied … for funding to extend our trail system and actually complete the 2007 Master Trail Plan which will take Paul Boorman trail from Highway 80 south all the way down to the loop out by Komatsu," Hill said.

The grant would not require any match from the city.

One Million Dollars for Texas Road Defect

By Charlie Thomas | www.bikelaw.com

Recently, attorneys with the Bike Law network took a case to a trial against a titan of a defendant: the Texas Department of Transportation. TxDOT was represented by the Attorney General’s Office, one of Texas’ largest legal teams. We had a great client, but it was a tough case to prove. So tough, in fact, that TxDOT offered nothing to settle the case before trial.

The Crash that Altered Mike Bagg’s Life

On a sunny Sunday in October, our client, Mike Bagg, a 56-year-old surgeon, was riding his bike in a bike lane in El Paso. It turns out the bike lane had a gap between two concrete panels. The gap was the right size to trap a bike tire and take control of the front wheel from the rider. The gap had once been filled with filler, but that had long since eroded away. …

Day 20: El Paso to Fort Hancock, TX: Sprint

Friday March 24, 2023, 62 miles (100 km) – Total so far: 995 miles (1,601 km) Holy cow! Karen and I were ready to leave at 7:30 at the same time as Steve & Rick (they are our sprinters). “Let’s ride through the city together”, they suggested. And so we did. We had heard that El Paso was a very bike-unfriendly city. We found the early morning drivers to be very kind, giving the four bikes the full inside lane of a fairly busy four-lane street. We sprinted fast up and down rolling roads through green light/red light intersections. We traveled from West El Paso through Old El Paso to East El Paso before a rest stop out of the city. It took 23 miles to get out of the urban area. Didn’t realize El Paso was that big and sprawling. We knew we had about 13 more miles to reach Kathy with the van and trailer. I worked hard to keep up with these strong cyclists knowing my quads will be …
