About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Your Turn – Jan. 27

Designing Bicycle  Cities – design mind on GOOD – GOOD

If you ride a bike and live in Texas like I do, you’re screwed. Three of the largest cities in the country are in the Lone Star state, and they are all among the worst to bike in. But in fact, only one or two of the biggest urban areas …

Review: thinksport Stainless Steel Water Bottle | Austin On Two Wheels
by elliott
While the true test will come during our Texas summers, I found the bottle did an excellent job of keeping water ice cold for 3-4 hours. This is considerably better than Polar bottles which tend to keep water cold 1-2 hours depending on ambient temperature. Also, as an added bonus the bottle is designed to handle hot liquids unlike most other sports bottles. While the thinksport bottle exceeded my ….

Fellow travelers « Jim’s Bike Blog
by jimsbikeblog
Among the dozens of fellow cyclists we met during our transcontinental bicycle journey last fall were three young men on a mission – literally.
Ryan James, Caleb Price and Jonathan Engelhardt, best friends from college, were traveling from San Diego to St. Augustine, Fla. – following roughly the same Southern Tier route that we used – to raise money for a medical clinic in Durban, South Africa, and for a mission trip to that country.
We crossed paths with the trio on Oct. 18 in Brackettville, on the southwestern approaches to the Texas Hill Country, where they and some of our riders had stopped for lunch at a local church, Templo Elienai…

Discovering America on 2 Wheels: Good Morning from Lake Jackson Tx!
by Wills on Wheels
Yep… I’m back at home… time to take care of a few things…and THINK and PLAN!

You know one of the things that keeps coming up in conversations besides the fact that I’m doing this cross country bicycle trek in winter is…. how I’m able to do it… not physically, mentally or emotionally but FINANCIALLY!

Just like a cross country bicycle trek in winter, your financial trek across the landscape of your life requires some thought, planning, sacrifice, discipline, flexibility and adjustment…

Can a Person Be Fit and Fat?

Texbiker.net Posted on January 26, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 26, 2010

As you have probably read or heard, America has a weight problem. Sometimes the statement is made that a person is fit and fat. I see some people that might be in this category on some of the rides I go on. I try to think of how these people may be in this condition and how they can remain that way while riding as much as they may claim.

My favorite health and fitness doctor had an article in his recent email newsletter that touched on this subject. Dr. Mirkin had this to say,

“Obesity and High-Fat Diets Interfere with Muscle Growth.

An editorial in The Journal of Physiology explains how both high-fat diets and obesity prevent strength gain with exercise, and increase risk for diabetes heart attacks, and premature death (1).

The editorial was inspired by a study from the University of California at Davis, showing that a high-fat diet prevents exercising mice from enlarging their muscles (2) . If this study can be applied to humans, it means that not only does a high-fat diet make you fatter, it also prevents you from enlarging your muscles.”

You can read the full article at www.drmirkin.com.

Short Ride Tonight – Proper Clothing Is Important

Texbiker.net Posted on January 26, 2010 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 26, 2010

A lesson refreshed during tonight’s ride is proper clothing selection. Since I am a temperature wimp proper clothing is essential. I chose a different jacket than usual and it was too light.

One good thing learned is eye covering. When it is cold (by my gauge anyway) my eyes water. I use sunglasses during the day but not at night. Last week I had a brainstorm to use clear protective glasses which wrap around the side. This is necessary since I wear glasses to see. I can report that while the rest of me was cold the eyes did not water one bit. Mission accomplished!

Tonight I rode my Raleigh M800 mountain bike as usual when it is dark. Lights ablaze and staying on the back streets makes for a safe ride. I rode 6.82 miles and the temperature was 58 degrees when I finished. Wind was not a factor. The charts. No cadence to report since I do not have the sensor on this bike.

Route January 26

Speed - Distance January 26 Raleigh M800

Elevation - Distance Janaury 26
