About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Austin Public Works asking for feedback on MoKan Trail extension

by: Eniola Longe | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The City of Austin is making progress on plans for expanding a new urban trail in east Austin. The city is now asking residents to weigh in on the project.

The MoKan Trail Preliminary Engineering Phase Virtual Open House, which launched Monday, debuts recommendations for the trail’s alignment and design features. The open house is available online in English and Spanish 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The open house will end Sunday April 23.

Its focus is on six segments of the 0.75-mile trail extension between North Pleasant Valley Road and Springdale Road, each with unique design challenges and considerations. …

BMX Lovers, Did You Know Midland Has A BMX Park?

Gwen | lonestar923.com

We hear people all the time saying there is nothing to do in Midland and Odessa so when we come across a gem we didn’t know about, we have to share it.

A few years ago Altitude Trampoline Park opened in Odessa and most recently Urban Air and the Little Gym opened in Midland. We all got our hopes up thinking Water Wonderland would be resurrected to discover that it was demolished and turned into commercial property.

There are all kinds of little hidden gems around the Basin that you may not know about. I recently discovered

Video: Tips to increase cyclists’ safety on East Texas roadways

By Lorena Rivas | www.kltv.com

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Between 2017 and 2021, more than 900 cyclists died on Texas roads. TxDOT is working to lower those numbers.

TxDOT is launching “Be Safe, Drive Smart” campaign to encourage drivers to follow safety laws in light of a recent report that there was a 34-percent increase in pedestrian fatalities and a 58-percent increase in bicyclist deaths during that time.

In Tyler during that same time period, there were 114 pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities.

John Cobb, manager of Speed and Comfort in Tyler, says the number one thing a cyclist can do is to …

‘El Paso Scene’ founder, publisher Randy Limbird dies at age 70

by: Dave Burge | www.ktsm.com

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Randy Limbird, who founded El Paso Scene magazine and ran it for nearly 30 years, has died.

Limbird, age 70, was also well known for his passion for bicycling. He had posted online recently that he was fighting an aggressive form of brain cancer.

He was remembered by friends, colleagues and community activists for his spirit and his contributions to El Paso.

“I’m really sad to learn that Randy Limbird has passed away on Friday (March 17),” Bob Moore, a longtime friend of Limbird’s and founder of ElPasoMatters.org, wrote on Limbird’s Facebook page.

Limbird started El Paso Scene, a monthly entertainment newspaper, in 1993 and ran it until it …

College Station City Council Awards A Design Contract For Separated Bike Lanes On George Bush Drive

Bill Oliver | wtaw.com

The College Station city council takes the next step towards separated bicycle lanes coming to George Bush Drive between Texas and Wellborn.

The council awarded a $235,000 dollar design contract at their March 9 meeting.

The project will also include modifications to existing traffic signals and intersections, as well as the widening of some existing sections of sidewalk where bicycles converge.

More specifically, the project will convert the bike lanes to separated bike lanes that considers bicycle safety, stormwater management and long-term maintenance cost. The project will also include …

Pedestrian and bicyclist traffic deaths spike in Texas

by: Tom Miller | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — People walking and riding their bikes are getting hit by cars more often, and at an alarming rate throughout Texas, data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows.

While the statistical spike is concerning for those who rely on walking or riding next to cars, they are a painful reminder to families who’ve lost a loved one.

That includes the family of Alexei Bauereris. A driver hit the 14-year-old boy while he walked back to his northwest Austin home in 2016. …

A Rough Start, a Blustery Wind, and a New Walden Bike Trail

Texbiker.net Posted on March 21, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 21, 2023

After four days of Zwift rides I was back on my Cervelo Caledonia and the roads. The first full day of spring was overcast and windy but warm enough for me to ride outside. As I thought about potential routes to ride I remembered the Atascocita South – Walden – Huffman one. I was surprised that my last ride on this route was October 6, 2022 when I looked in SportTracks. I don’t know why it has taken this long to ride it again. I thought about riding it in reverse but since it had been several months I decided to ride in the usual direction. The average distance for the route is just over 35 miles so I figured today would be that long.

3-21-2023 SportTracks Recent Ride History Atascocita South-Walden-Huffman
3-21-2023 SportTracks Recent Ride History Atascocita South-Walden-Huffman

Before starting today’s ride I watched stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya race in Spain. They climbed a number of mountains which I would not b doing. My big obstacle would the very strong south wind. As I normally do before starting a ride I checked the weather and the strong wind stood out quickly. From the south at 20 mph with 32 mile gusts meant the south and east route I chose would be into that wind until around 21 miles. My legs would get a workout.

After getting dressed and getting the final things in order I decided to pump up the tires on the Cervelo. I use a thread on air chuck on the Lezyne floor pump. I didn’t thread the chuck on properly and when I removed it to try again the Presta valve core came out deflating the front tire rapidly. I had to use pliers to get the valve core out of the chuck and then thread it back into the valve. Then both tires aired up with no problems.

Walking out the back door I didn’t that the pest service man was at the front door until I was going down the driveway. I had to turn around and go back into the house to get his check. As I unlocked the door the wind knocked the Cervelo over. With over 6500 miles on the Cervelo I managed to not have it fall over until the last 2 weeks. It fell over at the Gator Ride and today.

With all of that taken care of I rolled away on the ride at 12:08 PM, later than i wanted. But the temperature had warmed up to 70 while I was delayed. I almost wore a heavier long sleeve jersey with the wind jacket but I changed my mind and grabbed a regular long sleeve jersey instead. Even with the strong wind I was comfortable except for the first 10 minutes until I warmed up. Weather for the bike ride: start 70 degrees, 74% humidity, dew point 62, overcast, wind S 20 mph gusts 32 mph; finish 72 degrees, 74% humidity, dew point 63, overcast, wind S 21 mph gusts 30 mph.

Apparently during my absence of not riding this route in Walden several stretches of bike trails have been completed. I rode on one section today, around mile 14 on the map. Next time I will ride on more.

On the way back to Kingwood riding west over Lake Houston the wind pushed the Cervelo around with the gusts. My firm grip kept me on track but it was hard. I was still able to keep my speed at 17 to 18 mph so I got across the lake at a good pace. On the west side I turned north and the wind was less of a problem. I finished the ride at 2:53 PM with a sporadic mist coming down speckling the Bolt’s screen.

Stuck To The Watopia’s Waistband Route Today

Texbiker.net Posted on March 20, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 20, 2023

Spring arrives at 4:24 PM CDT today but outside it wasn’t quite ready with the temperature around 55 degrees and cloudy. So it was a Zwift ride today. After trying to out smart the Zwift route today I rode on the route with no turns off of the route. I rode the Watopia’s Waistband route which is 17.3 miles long with 332 feet of climbing but I didn’t stop until I rode 20.41 miles and climbed 354 feet. That was a lot less climbing than yesterday’s ride. I thought I might make a turn off the route after completing Watopia’s Waistband but there weren’t any when I finished.

During the ride my pace partner started out in front of me but as you can see in the video as the ride unfolded he fell behind, over 2 minutes at times, and stayed there until I finished Watopia’s Waistband. I thought I set a PR but none showed in Zwift or Strava. My legs felt good and pedaling was good. There just over 10,000 other Zwifters riding in Watopia.

During the ride I listened to SiriusXM 60’s Gold music. I used my GoPro Hero 10 Black as the webcam.

The route goes clockwise around Watopia. ZwiftInsider.com describes it, “Originally created as a “rebel route”, Watopia’s Waistband was launched in game as an event-only route, then became an open route in the December 2022 update. It’s called “Watopia’s Waistband” because it’s a perimeter route that nicely encircles key landmarks in Watopia proper including downtown Watopia, Fuego Flats, the Italian Villas, the Volcano, and the Fishing Village.” The route is somewhat lumpy as shown by my SportTracks summary. There is one significant downhill but it is not very long followed by a 2 mile ride up to the next peak.

This was the 9th time riding this route on Zwift and the longest distance since I didn’t stop at the end of the route.
