About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Riding Up And Down Scottish Hills Around Zwift’s Version of Glasgow

Texbiker.net Posted on March 17, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 17, 2023

I didn’t ride in Ireland on Saint Patrick’s Day but I was close, at least in a virtual sense. I rode the Scotland The Muckle Yin route in Zwift. I don’t know if there is a translation for the “Muckle Yin”. Outside it was raining, windy and 45 degrees. No reason to be out there. Inside it was much warmer as I rode up and down the Scottish hills around the Zwift version of Glasgow. The route covered 14.6 miles and I rode a little farther at 14.73 miles coasting past the finish line a little. I hoped the 925 feet of climbing was divided evenly over those miles but it wasn’t. There were some small hills but I rode over the large hill in both directions. The first peak was at 6.1 miles and the next one came at 11.7 miles. There were several nice downhills where I hit my max speed of 35. Zwift opened Scotland this week to free rides and around 2100 other Zwifters were riding there. On one of the climbs it hit 13% for a short time.

According to ZwiftInsider.com Muckle Yin translates to the Big One in Scottish. This pitchy route begins and ends in Glasgow, but you quickly leave the city and head to the countryside to ride the scenic Highlands roads and ascend to the Sgurr Summit in both directions. After your second descent of the Sgurr you’ll make your way back to Glasgow to complete the city circuit, finishing with the Champion’s Sprint.

Student Bikes His Way to a Better Future

By Joey Gomez | texasborderbusiness.com

McALLEN, Texas – When situations are at their hardest, sometimes the best thing a student can do is remind themselves that while they may not have same resources as others, they will arrive at the same destination through hard work and effort.

This is a mantra that South Texas College Precision Manufacturing Technology student Victor Moreno keeps in mind as he cycles down the often-dangerous stretch of highway between the McAllen-Hidalgo International Bridge and STC.

Moreno said he wakes up between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. and pedals down Reynosa’s streets to get to …

Commentary: From doctor to patient: Why raising awareness of MS is crucial

Lisa Doggett | www.statesman.com

Primary care physicians have the important responsibility of not just diagnosing and treating their patients, but also guiding them toward healthy lifestyle choices that can prevent disease. As a family medicine doctor living with multiple sclerosis, I am particularly passionate about preventative healthcare, especially during MS Awareness Week.

MS is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system, and there is currently no cure. The immune system attacks the central nervous system, which leads to damage and disruption of nerve signals. This can cause a wide range of symptoms which can worsen over time. …

… I took my ‘life sentence’ with MS and turned it into motivation to take advantage of every day. In 2018, nine years after my diagnosis, I successfully finished the 150-mile Bike MS: Texas MS 150 bike ride, which I viewed as both a physical and mental accomplishment. I couldn’t have done it without the encouragement of the other riders and volunteers, either living with MS or fighting for awareness around me. Since then, I’ve participated in every Texas MS 150, and this April, my 76-year-old mother will join me again at the Austin starting line to ride along with me. …

PRESIDIO — With Women’s History Month in full swing, the Consulate of Mexico in Presidio has launched a host of programming aimed at empowering Mexican and Mexican American women. This past weekend, the consulate hosted a family bike ride aimed at providing a fun way to learn about consular services as well as the opening of an art exhibit showcasing paintings by female artists.

Presidio’s branch of the Consulate of Mexico is just one of 52 locations around the country, making it the largest consular network within another country in the world. The Women’s History Month programming is part of new Head Consul Gamaliel Bustillos’ plans to make the small-but-mighty office a community hub instead of a strictly impersonal government office.

Bustillos insisted that the …

Author: Brandi Smith | www.khou.com

The organization started 10 years ago as a hobby for a guy with a passion for cycling.

These days, he has anywhere from a handful to a truckload of bikes. Some are rideable, some far from it.

"We gladly accept your bicycles, your used bicycles, your slightly used bicycles, your rusted bicycles," Surette said. …

Spring-area bike shop Biking Roots fosters family-friendly exercise

By Emily Lincke | communityimpact.com

Biking is a great sport for riders of all ages, and one of the few physical activities where a group can participate at different skill levels together, Biking Roots co-owner Alise Bailey said.

“We call bikes ‘the great equalizer’ because our youngest [son] was riding the same trails that we were on a little tiny bike, and he felt like he was part of the family,” Alise said.

Alise and her husband, Evan Bailey, co-own and operate Biking Roots together in Spring, opening the store’s current location on Rhodes Road in January 2022. The Baileys—who had prior business experience—originally opened their shop in 2019, inspired by Evan’s life-long love of biking.

“Our main goal for the shop …

Blown In The Wind, Sky Threatening. 2 Route Changes

Texbiker.net Posted on March 16, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 16, 2023

I watched the GP de Denain race from France while eating breakfast. The race had 17 sections of cobbles and a bunch of crashes. One rider on the Team Arkea Samsic broke his handle bar leaving the left brake lever dangling by the bar tape. Apparently he changed bikes and broke the handle bar on the right side dangling the brake lever. He had mud on his shorts making for a rough ride. Fortunately he didn’t appear to be hurt. I don’t think I would ride with that problem.

My bike ride had some challenges but not of that type. Mine was the weather. It changed from yesterday’s sunny and light wind to overcast and very strong wind. The ride began at 10:38 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia. I set out to ride the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove route but when I arrived at the Chevron station on FM 1960 at Atascocita Shores Drive the sky looked threatening so I decided to change to the Atascocita – E Lake Houston Parkway route which makes a u-turn at E Lake Houston Parkway back to Kingwood. But as I came to Fairlake Lane I changed my mind because the sky didn’t look quite as threatening so I switched to the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. This also eliminated biking south into the very strong headwind to Spanish Cove on FM 2100. I was glad for the change as I battled the wind riding south on Fairlake Lane. At FM 2100 turning left put the wind at my back all the way to FM 1960 in Huffman. I wondered how hard riding back across Lake Houston would be with nothing breaking the wind except passing traffic.

As I approached the east side of the lake on FM 1960 the wind from the south was strong but not as bad as I expected. But the farther out over the water I rode the strong wind gusts pushed my bike around at will. My strong grip got me back on tracks to the west side where the opening under the causeway allowed the wind gusts to come full force. The turn onto Atascocita Shores Drive came at the right time changing to a mostly tailwind. All was good until I cross the San Jacinto River on W Lake Houston Parkway when a light mist started. The weather forecast said rain might start around 2 PM and that was about an hour away. The mist resisted until I finished the ride at 1:20 PM. About 15 minutes after the finish it rained .02″ which would have been enough to soak me. Good thing I didn’t ride to Spanish Cove.

Weather conditions: start 71 degrees, 80% humidity, dew point 65, overcast, wind S 10 mph; finish 71 degrees, dew point 66, overcast, wind S 18 mph gust 31 mph.

With today’s ride I need 225 miles to reach my 650 mile goal for March.

Yesterday I moved the GoPro mount on the Cervelo to a new position on the right of the Bolt computer. This would put it in the same position as the Lynskey Helix bike. I flipped the K-Edge mount over to bend to the right and moved the Garmin mount from the bottom to the top. Since I’m right handed this put the GoPro closer. I think this worked good during the ride. These photos show the new position.

Bicyclist recovering after he was nearly killed after hit-and-run in East Austin

By John Krinjak | www.fox7austin.com

AUSTIN, Texas – A bicyclist who was nearly killed by a hit-and-run driver in East Austin is on the road to recovery, after undergoing brain surgery.

"My brother was on his way to work, always traveled by bike," said Travis Davis.

Cody Davis, 37, was almost at work when he was hit by a car on Waller Street near East 4th Street around 6 p.m. Friday.

"Hit him and took off," said Travis Davis.

"Had no care in the world for stopping or anything," said Enrique Hernandez, Cody Davis’ manager. …

Video: Barton Hills residents want redesign of new traffic calming devices while some praise move

by Ricardo Lewis | cbsaustin.com

AUSTIN, Texas — All over Austin, new safety barriers are going up for traffic calming which is intended to protect pedestrians and bicyclists. While some neighbors say the devices make them feel safe, others in the Barton Hills neighborhood in south Austin are voicing their concerns.

The flexible white delineator posts that line Barton Skyway were installed in February by the Austin Transportation Department to make the bicycle lanes safer and to calm speeding. Neighbors should have received an email or notification in the mail about the safety and mobility improvements.

Three petitions have been started for and against traffic calming devices. There’s been debate among neighbors surrounding the white poles. …
