About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling Blog and News Roundup for December 3rd

Texbiker.net Posted on December 3, 2009 by Rick AnkrumDecember 3, 2009

Imagine buying your next bike in your local supermarket. In the UK the local bike shops are facing stiff competition from the supermarkets but the bigger threat is from online sellers. In the US many bikers buy from their LBS but online may become more likely. The article from BikeBiz:

Cycle stores say online is a ‘greater threat than supermarkets’

BikeBiz cycle dealer research underlines rocketing importance of the internet for the bicycle retail sector

The BikeBiz Retail Survey 2009 has revealed that cycle retailers nationwide fear the growth of online retail far more than any other type of direct competition. In fact, the increased rivalry from supermarkets selling bikes troubled just 6.3 per cent of cycle retailers, a figure dwarfed by the 27.8 per cent concerned that online retail competition is a threat to their business. …

Awaiting the 2010 Race Calendar « mellow velo
by KFuller
My first racing season has always been “months” away. Many months. Enough nice, long monthy-months to instill confidence in me that there’s plenty of time to prepare. The summer was so hot and so endless, the days of late sunlight seemed permanent. And then I looked at a calendar: Sixty-four days. That’s how long I have. …

DFW Point-to-Point: Commute Year
by Steve A
It’s early December and, between the weather, “use it or lose it vacation” time, and the year end holiday, 2009 is mostly done in terms of bike commuting. Rather than waiting for the very end of the month, I thought I’d do my “year in review” now. There were several milestones, including a new commute bike, a work location change, launch of this blog, a few fairly prosaic events, and the obligatory mileage milestone.

Help make the Nueces Bike Blv. a reality
By Jason Whaley
The Nueces Bike Boulevard has been a no-brainer for bicycle enthusiasts, downtown boosters and area planners for quite some time. You take a flat street with relatively low auto traffic and scores of existing bike riders looking to get from the UT area to downtown and simply make it a bike-priority street that discourages through auto traffic. Add quicker travel for bicyclists by removing many of the stop signs, some identity with signage and public art, and things get even more exciting. …

Simple – Green – Frugal: Pedal Power Update – December 2009
by Heather @ SGF
You see, it’s in the 40’s here in Central Texas, with wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour, and YES, I spent 2 hours this morning on my bike to get our household errands run. … Gone are the days when a 20 mile ride was a novelty. Now, I go out of my way to add the extra miles onto a tour around town (almost always an effort to complete errands). I’ve also noticed that rather than biking on some of the larger roads where I can get to and from home much faster (but where …

Why Sprinting Improves Endurance
from Fitness & Health with Dr. Gabe Mirkin
Jens Bangsbo of the University of Copenhagen has shown that if you want to run, cycle or swim faster at any distance, you have to train at a pace that is almost as fast as you can move (Journal of Applied Physiology, November 2009). He asked competitive distance runners to reduce their mileage by 25 percent, and to run 8 to 12 30-second sprints 2-3 times a week, with some additional 0.6-0.8 mile sprints 1 or 2 times per week, for 6 to 9 weeks. The control group of runners continued their regular training program, and showed no improvement…

Cyclist, 69, struck by car in fatal NW Harris crash
By ANITA HASSAN
HOUSTON CHRONICLE
Nov. 28, 2009, 11:29PM

A 69-year-old bicyclist was killed after he was struck by a car in northwest Harris County Saturday morning, authorities said.

Frank Stafford Campbell, identified by family members, was riding his bike with two other bicyclists north on Stokes around 8:45 a.m. as the group approached an intersection on Waller Spring Creek Road, Harris County Sheriff’s Office authorities said.

One of the cyclist noticed that the driver of a 1995 Nissan Altima, traveling east on the road, was going very fast and did not appear to be slowing down as it approached the intersection. …
