About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Waiting For The Chill To Leave, Watching Races Then On The Road

Texbiker.net Posted on March 15, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 15, 2023

The morning started out chilly but while I waited for the temperature to rise I ate breakfast and watched three bike races. After two days of Zwifting i wanted to take advantage of slightly warmer weather and ride outside. The three races got me enthused to ride today. The races: from Belgium the men’s women’s Nokere Koerse and the Milano – Torino from Italy. The Milano – Torino is the oldest bike race according to the commentators.

When I started getting ready to ride the weather was slowly warming up. By the 12:05 PM start time it was 65 degrees and sunny. Bravely I left the leg warmers at home but I did wear a long sleeve jersey under the wind jacket. The shade was chilly but I figured around 15 minutes into the bike ride my body heat would reach the level that I didn’t notice it anymore.

Weather: start 65 degrees, 43% humidity, dew point 42, a few clouds, wind E 13 mph; finish 70 degrees, 49% humidity, dew point 50, a few clouds, wind E 10 mph.

Since it is Wednesday I rode north on my Kingwood – FM1485 – Kingwood route through Porter and New Caney. My last road ride on Sunday I used my Lynskey Helix bike and usually I switch bikes but again because it is Wednesday I rode my Lynskey Helix again. While generally riding the same streets there was enough difference in the route that Strava didn’t match it with any previous rides. Comparing today’s ride with recent rides with the same name in SportTracks the ones below came up.

3-15-2023 SportTracks Recent Ride Histroy Kingwood-FM1485-Kingwood Route
3-15-2023 SportTracks Recent Ride Histroy Kingwood-FM1485-Kingwood Route

Today I rode 32.44 miles which is about average for the route. Over last year and this year I rode three different bikes on this route: Cervelo Caledonia, Lynskey R300, and Lynskey Helix. Today’s mileage upped my total for the month to 390.9 miles leaving 260 miles to reach my 650 mile March goal.

An unusual encounter while I stopped for the traffic light on Loop 494 where FM 1485 crosses the railroad tracks. Eric Price pulled up beside me in a New Caney ISD truck and called out to me. I was surprised. We talked about biking while waiting for the light to change. I follow him on Strava.

Strava awarded me the Local Legend on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route. this segment is in Elm Grove Village around 3.3 miles into today’s ride.

Thursday’s weather looks favorable for biking as long as I don’t leave as late as today. Rain may arrive in the afternoon. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday look like Zwift ride days with the temperature below my 60 degree threshold.

Can You Get Handmade Bicycles In Texas? Heck Yeah, You can.

Charlie | mix941kmxj.com

It’s been a long time since I rode my Mongoose bicycle around town. I was king of the road thanks to the pegs it had on it. I could do all kinds of sick tricks. Now that I’m older, it would be nice to have something a little more…grownup.

Can you get handmade, custom bicycles in Texas? Not just yeah, but heck yeah, you can. …

Did the first part of the ride solo, to take it easy. I quickly noticed I had forgotten my bottles. I didn’t have enough time to go back and get them. I spent the first half of the ride debating what to do. Take a shortcut and hit a gas station? Ask someone on the ride for a swig of water and mouth herpes? Commandeer a garden hose? I stopped at a park on Collins but the fountain was turned off. Group caught me at Holford. By the time I was at the top of the route I figured I would be fine without water. If I could do the Prescott Circle Trail in AZ in summer over 12 hours with one water stop (don’t do that!), I could survive this. But it sure didn’t motivate me to want to go hard!

Zwift > France Casse – Pattes, Another Cool March Morning

Texbiker.net Posted on March 14, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 14, 2023

Another cool March morning today as my ride decision time rolled around. I opted for a Zwift ride. Looking at the upcoming events none appealed to me or the time was too late so I created a Zwift “meetup” riding in France on the Casse – Pattes route. One lap is 14.8 miles long but I wanted to ride 22 miles and adjusted the meetup to that length. Over those miles I expected to climb about 600 feet mainly over two hills. The first hill was not that tall but the second one was longer and higher. This was the third time riding this route and the longest. I wasn’t alone on the course with over 2800 other Zwifters in France.

I thought I might try some side roads after riding 14.8 miles but none appeared. In fact, I don’t think there were any turn options during the whole ride.

The ride overview from SportTracks shows the 2 hills and the flat roads on either side of them.

3-14-2023 SportTracks Zwift Ride Summary France Casse - Pattes

Strava was slow showing the ride activity so I went to Zwift to get the fit file and this route map. That’s the first time I did that.

Houston bike deaths outpacing 2022

Jay R. Jordan | www.axios.com

Houston is on pace to outnumber last year’s bike deaths on our streets, advocates say.

Why it matters: A pair of recent deadly crashes involving cyclists highlights the lack of safe cycling infrastructure throughout the Bayou City, even as Houston transportation authorities work to bolster the bike network.

The big picture: Bryan Nost, 35, died Feb. 28, four days after he was hit while riding his bike by the driver of a delivery van in the 7000 block of West Gulf Bank Road, near North Houston-Rosslyn Road, police said. …

DART’s marriage to Dallas is on the rocks

By Dallas Morning News Editorial | www.dallasnews.com

Most Dallas residents aren’t tuned into the troubled marriage between City Hall and Dallas Area Rapid Transit. They should be. Hanging in the balance are tens of millions of dollars for sidewalks, traffic signals and bike lanes.

Dallas and DART have clashed about the terms under which the transit agency would hand $111 million in excess sales tax to the city. A recent ultimatum from DART that it could withhold about three-quarters of that money because of delays and requested changes to the Silver Line project did not sit well with city leaders.

“I think it’s unfair,” City Manager T.C. Broadnax said at a recent public meeting.

But Dallas needs to look in the mirror. It appears the …

Bicyclist hospitalized after being hit by vehicle

by: Gabriela Gonzalez | www.valleycentral.com

HARLINGEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A bicyclist was taken to a hospital after being hit by a truck Monday evening in Harlingen, authorities say.

Officers with the Harlingen Police Department responded 4th Street and Tyler Avenue in reference to an auto-pedestrian accident.

A woman claimed to be hit by an older man in a truck while riding her bike, authorities say. The truck driver stopped to help and called to police to the scene.

Responding officers closed the northern portion of the street to help the bicyclist.

The woman was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gearing Up to End Hunger at Gator Ride

By Mark Kramer | baytownsun.com

With a brisk wind blowing and clear skies on Saturday, more than 480 cyclists took to the roads for a good cause during the 34th annual Gator Ride.

Hearts and Hands of Baytown is now serving as the organizer of the event, which was previously led by the YMCA since 1989. All proceeds from the event are going toward the Gear Up to End Hunger annual campaign to provide assistance to families in need.

“We are overwhelmed by the show of support and all of the riders who participated in this event,” said Nikki Rincon, Hearts and Hands executive director. “Their generosity is certainly appreciated and will go a long way to helping our food pantry provide assistance to local families.”
