About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Zwift – Started Makuri Islands Chasing The Sun Then Changed

Texbiker.net Posted on March 13, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 13, 2023

The last time I rode Zwift was February 18th since the weather has been good for riding outside. Today it was cooler than I prefer at 55 degrees when the decision time came on whether to ride outside or on Zwift. I chose Zwift.

Looking at the upcoming events there wasn’t one that interested me or started soon enough. I looked at the list of routes in Makuri Islands and saw I hadn’t rode before, Chasing The Sun. It is 21.8 miles and climbs 1,034 feet according to the description in Zwift. That looked doable. I got dressed, warmed up for about 5 minutes and then started the ride.

The climbing was concentrated in two hills, the first one starting around 5km and the second at 17km. I rode over the first climb but when the turn came to the Forest Climb I changed the route. Up to that point I had climbed 619 feet and I didn’t want to climb the remaining 400 feet. I wasn’t sure where I would go. I made a couple of other turn changes from the roads Zwift put up. I based my choice on how flat the options were and chose the flatter one. I ended up riding 13.0 miles out of the 21.8 miles on Chasing The Sun. At that point I moved to the Castle Path road. I turned on a couple of other roads from the planned ones Zwift showed. I rode 22.16 miles and climbed 807 feet. Longer distance, less climbing.

Strava reported to top results: PR on Railways and Rooftops (14:32) and 2nd fastest time on Railway Sprint (55s).

Avenue B and Alamo Street bike lanes offer a limited glimpse of the possibilities

Avatar photo by Robert Rivard | sanantonioreport.org

A few years ago, a passenger in a pickup truck slapped my wife Monika on the back and then threw a beer bottle at her as she rode her bike south on Broadway amid vehicle traffic. Since then I’ve tried without success to get her back riding the streets of the city’s urban core with me.

Late last year she picked out a sleek new Trek hybrid, complete with lights and a friendly bell. We went for safe rides on the protected Mission Reach, and last week she declared herself ready for the Tuesday evening SATX Social Ride, the city’s biggest weekly recreational cycling event. There is safety in numbers, I assured her. Hundreds of participants with all levels of experience on all sorts of bikes are led by founder Jeff Moore, ride organizer Yvette Hernandez and other experienced cyclists.

A Monday press release from the …

My mom joined me for a 40 mile bike ride this weekend, all over #Austin . I'm still training for this insane #triathlon in 3 weeks. Somehow I have to be able to swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles, and run 13.2 miles in 8.5 hours. It's great to get family support! #MSWarriors #MS pic.twitter.com/sVX5ogTeDL

Busy Week Biking Closing Out On Kingwood Streets & Trails

Texbiker.net Posted on March 12, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 12, 2023

It’s not often that I bike Kingwood streets twice in a week but I did this week. I rode different bikes each ride. This week has been a busy bike ride one with a total of 237.49 miles, all on the road, the first week over 200 miles in 2023. The last week with more miles was September 19 to 25 with 246.16 miles. Riding the Gator Ride in Baytown yesterday helped. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia 5 days and the Lynskey 2 days.

3-12-2023 Week Bike Rides Summary 3-6-23 to 3-12-23
3-12-2023 Week Bike Rides Summary 3-6-23 to 3-12-23

On today’s ride some portions of the route went opposite of my usual direction putting a couple of hills in my way. The first was on the greenbelt trail through Kingwood Lakes and the second was going up Laurel Springs Lane from Hamblen Road. I stopped at the park in Kingwood Lakes for these photos.

I got four medals from Strava. Three of them: PR on Crystal Springs to Barrington (1:28), 2nd fastest time on Laurel Spring Nbound St. Andrews (2:52), and 3rd fastest time on Crystal Springs to Hamblen (Rivergrove) (4:10).

Rental Scooters and Bikes Returning to Dallas Streets. Here’s How It Will Be Different

By Ken Kalthoff | www.nbcdfw.com

Shared scooters were removed from Dallas in 2020

Shared scooters and bikes are about to return to the streets of Dallas.

It’s the result of more than two years of planning after up to 10,000 of the shared vehicles on the street proved to be a nuisance for the city.

There were shared bikes in 2017 and 2018, then shared scooters from 2018 to 2020 before the city ordered them removed.

Now, Lime is one of …

Downtown Round Rock park project on May ballot would expand Brushy Creek trail

By Brooke Sjoberg | communityimpact.com

Round Rock residents may have a new downtown-area park to visit, pending the results of a bond election.

The Lawn at Brushy Creek was approved for design by officials March 9. The project could extend an existing trail down Sheppard Street/Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way toward central downtown as an expansion to the Brushy Creek hike and bike trail, and solve stormwater issues by providing options for water detention and water-quality management.

Officials awarded a $277,834 contract to design firm Dream Workshop to begin creating the schematic master plan for the park. City documents state the design will help plan out the use of greenspaces owned by the city for the park, as well as land required for Heritage Trail, which would run through the park. The firm will also …

Man killed by falling construction debris near UT Austin campus, APD investigating

by: Mercedez Hernandez | www.kxan.com

Austin (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department said it is investigating a death allegedly caused by a falling object from a high-rise construction project in the West Campus neighborhood.

An APD incident report said a call for a deceased person came in to dispatch around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in the 2400 block of Rio Grande Street.

SafeHorns, a private group of UT Austin parents, students and faculty that advocates for safety around campus, tweeted Friday about the death, asking witnesses to contact authorities and family attorneys with what they saw.

The organization said Michael Delgado, 29, was riding his bike near the Shell Gas station on Rio Grande Street when he was hit by falling debris. …
