About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Ohio Mountain Bike Championship

Texbiker.net Posted on September 1, 2009 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 1, 2009

This obviously is not Texas bicycle related other than the fact that I am from the town where the championships were held, Zanesville. The terrain around this part of Ohio reminds me of the eastern US MTB race locale. I have been to the Dillon State Park many times but there wasn’t any place even thought of hosting this type of an event. The MTB had not been invented yet when I lived there. This part of Ohio is very rural. Several counties have a population of a few thousand. This is the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Coal, cows and corn reign here.

So if you are interested in how a small town in Ohio can host the MTB championship take a look at this link and the one below. The stories are carried by the local TV station (WHIZ) and the newspaper, The Zanesville Times Recorder. There are some good pictures.

Excerpt from the WHIZ website:

Dillon State Park Hosts Cycling Race
By: Katie Jeffries
It was off to the races this morning in Dillon State Park. Professional and novice cyclists alike gathered to compete in the Ohio Mountain Bike Championship. The professional cyclists practice almost everyday and were ready for the race to begin.

And from the Times Recorder:

Mountain bikers flock to Dillon State Park
BY JIM BARSTOW • Staff Writer
NASHPORT — Things got a little rocky for Jordan Morozowsky and about 100 of his friends. A resident of Roseville, Morozowsky navigated over and around hundreds of boulders strewn along the wooded hillsides of northern Muskingum County Sunday and captured first place in his class during the Ohio Mountain Bike Championship Series at Dillon State Park.

I spoke last week with Ryan Albert with Central Texas Grassroots Cycling, the new organizers of the Derby who take over from the series founder Andrew Stackhouse, about its return and changes for the new year. First, what remains the same. The Dirty Derby will be held every Tuesday evening at the Austin/Del Valle Motorcross Park (ADVMX) from September 1 through December 15. In addition to cyclocross, ….

HARDER’N HELL 100
by System6
BEST ULTRA RACE IN THE COUNTRY?

Parts of me just returned from the best day of road racing ever.  Arguably not my best day, but more about that later.  However, for several hundred USACycling licensed athletes, it was a day that almost defies description.  So let me describe it for you as best I can.

Every year in late August, the wonderful folks of Wichita Falls, Texas, put on a weekend of cycling…

My Day at the 2009 Hotter’n Hell Hundred

Texbiker.net Posted on August 30, 2009 by Rick AnkrumAugust 30, 2009

The weather was abnormally cool. The riders were large in number. I saw ride # 13899 at one point. I was thinking this would be the year to maybe ride the 100 mile route even though I would miss the ride through Sheppard Air Force Base and the cheering air force personnel.

Well my plans changed at about mile 40 when I was involved in a crash. You can see some of it in part 2 of the videos. I was not injured to the point that I could not ride but I was feeling some pain. The nurses/doctors at the ABB rest stop cleaned up my road rash and put some the mesh bandage on my arm and left knee. I start to look like one of the riders in the Tour de France now.

With my change in plans I turned off at Hell’s Gate and took the 75 mile route. The rest of the ride was fine since the wind was out of the ENE which meant a tailwind most of the time to the finish. The temperature at the end was 85 deg. according the to sign atop a building downtown. This indeed was a mild one. Last year was mild as well, not over 100. Is this a trend?

I decided to divide the video into three sections. This year I think I captured the flyover of the jets from Sheppard AFB as the Star Spangled Banner was ending.
