About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Oh to Be Young Again

Texbiker.net Posted on August 23, 2009 by Rick AnkrumAugust 23, 2009

I was thumbing through the Wall Street Journal August 7th Weekend Journal and ran across this story, “Cycling’s One-in-a-Million Story“.  Reed Albergotti writes how this overworked Wall Street worker buys a bike to stay fit and finds she has extraordinary talent as a professional bicycle racer. Evelyn Stevens worked 50 hour weeks on Wall Street. Now she has a totally different lifestyle. I do not think of the WSJ as a source of bicycling stories but it did get me thinking.

According to her coach, Matt Koschara, “She’s the most complete rider I’ve ever come across.”

Velonews.com also wrote about Ms. Stevens in a July 14th article on their website. The author thinks Evelyn Stevens is a rising star.

Now what does that have to do with Texbiker.net and me? Well, I did not really find bicycle riding until 1979 when I was 32 years old. This was past the prime years for starting a racing career, even if I had some amount of talent. When I read one of the articles or hear a story about some athlete discovery I have a chance to do a little what-if dreaming.

As it is, I enjoy riding and though I am not a racer I do enjoy a fast downhill or a strong tailwind to speed me along.
