About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Hearts & Hands Baytown Gator Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on March 11, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 11, 2023

I left home a little before 6 AM driving to Lee College in Baytown where the Heart & Hands Gator Ride starts. When I arrived at the parking lot there were some open spaces and I pulled the Jeep in. I looked at the outside temperature on the Jeep dash and saw 71 degrees. This would be the warmest Gator Ride for me. The previous 5 times were colder. One time it was 42 degrees at the start. Back in 2010 the route went over the Fred Hartman Bridge but not today. In previous years the organizer was the YMCA but this year a new organization took over, Hearts & Hands of Baytown. Below is a summary of the times I rode the Gator Ride.

From the parking lot I walked to the starting area to pick up my packet. Entering the building I thought it would take awhile to move through the line but it was shorter and faster than I expected. When I got my packet I asked a lady how many had registered and she said 499. During the ride I saw number 561. Back to the parking lot to get my gear and bike. I was going to meet Jodi and Jeff at the starting line to ride together. They live in Baytown.

We rolled away at 7:50 AM on the 52 mile route heading north to Crosby and back to Baytown. I had the route loaded on my Bolt computer for turn-by-turn directions. The directions were good until 7.1 miles when a police directed to go straight instead of turning right because a train was blocking the road. The Bolt beeped a lot as we rode off course but at 11.3 miles we joined the original route. I wondered if this would change the distance but at the finish the ride was 52.32 miles instead of 52.5 miles. Original route map link and the actual route map link. Changing the route missed the first rest stop. Our first rest stop was at the Crosby Fire Station along US90.

Weather conditions: start 70 degrees, 94% humidity, dew point 68, fog, wind S 6 mph; finish 81 degrees, 58% humidity, dew point 64, mostly cloudy, wind SW 16 mph gusts 24 mph.

As long as we rode north and east the wind wasn’t a problem but after the second rest stop in Crosby the route made the turn to bring us back to Baytown. The roads zig zagged sometimes putting us into the headwind and other times not. At 49.7 miles the direction turned back to the north and northwest and a tailwind helped get me to the finish line at 12:05 PM. The last rest stop was at 44.3 miles where I fueled up and used the port-a-pottie.

The road surfaces were good most of the time though the first mile in Baytown the streets had lots of humps in the asphalt over expansion joints. I enjoyed the company of Jodi and Jeff. Jeff stopped at the Crosby Fire Station to go on a conference call. I think he rode after the call.

A new map illustrates and celebrates San Antonio’s growing greenway network

By Jack Morgan | www.tpr.org

The city of San Antonio has expanded its hike-n-bike trail system for decades. Now, a San Antonian has stepped up to create a unique map detailing all those trails.

Davey Bemporad is one of those guys who spends a lot of time cycling.

“I am a lover of bicycles and riding,” Bemporad said. “I’ve been doing since I was a kid. And currently, I’m a bike commuter.”

Even his job revolves around bicycling. He is the trails and transportation planner with the Great Springs Project, which aims to create a greenway from San Antonio’s northeast side all the way to Austin.

The map he recently created is …

Walk your bike’: Here’s why the River Walk has the message, and its relationship to bikes

Shepard Price | www.expressnews.com

Those walking the River Walk near Blue Star Arts Complex will see a sign spray-painted into the sidewalk: "Walk your bike."

The sign, before (or after, depending on the side you approach it from) a relatively steep hill, is the only one of its type along the 15 miles of scenic trail. So why is it there?

"The ‘Walk Your Bike’ signage was a requirement due to the federal dollars received for that section," Katye Brought, public affairs manager for the San Antonio River Authority, wrote in an email. "It is not located anywhere else."

That requirement came as …

Preparation For The Gator Ride; GoPro Mount and Clothing

Texbiker.net Posted on March 10, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 10, 2023

Slightly cooler weather arrived early this morning and I waited longer than I should’ve hoping the temperature would go up a few degrees. Rolling out at 11:26 AM I decided to ride the Kingwood streets on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I don’t usually ride Kingwood streets on a weekday and when I do ride my bike is the Lynksey Helix. I wanted to test the new GoPro mounting position and get an idea of what to wear for tomorrow’s Gator Ride in Baytown. The weather tomorrow will be similar.

The new mounting position for the GoPro on the Cervelo is left of the Bolt computer and out front but lower than the previous position. I came up with the new position after looking at the mount I use on the Lynskey Helix which on the right side of the Bolt and lower. I did not think about turning the K-Edge mount upside down to lower the camera position so it doesn’t stand up so tall. These photos how the new position. The GoPro is close to the Bolt but not touching to avoid the problem I had on ride awhile back when the GoPro moved into the Bolt’s power button and turned it off. I tightened the K-Edge mounting screws to avoid that problem. The camera is a little harder to remove and return to the mount for handheld shots but I think I will get better with practice.

Today I wore a long sleeve jersey under a wind jacket. The jersey wasn’t thermal but is a different fabric than regular jerseys. I felt warm as I heated up. I will wear the same combination for the Gator Ride. No leg warmers since the temperature will improve to the 80’s by the end of the ride. I’ll just chill out for the early part of the ride. I don’t want to take clothing off and carry it in pockets. This might be the warmest Gator Ride I’ve done.

Texas Bicycling Action – March 9, 2023

City begins construction on shared pathways to Zilker Park

Kylee Howard | thedailytexan.com

New construction on shared pathways into Zilker Park started recently to make the park more accessible to patrons without cars, according to a Feb. 21 press release from the City of Austin.

Holly Hawk, director of development for the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy, said the conservancy is grateful to the city for funding the project.

“We are excited to see the Zilker Pathways project provide safe access to the garden and greater connectivity to all of the Zilker metropolitan amenities,” Hawk said.

The project, meant to provide a mixed-use pathway for biking and pedestrian use, consists of three phases. According to the project’s fact sheet, Phase 1 will cover construction on Barton Springs Road leading into Zilker Botanical Garden. Austin Public Works anticipates the …

Video: Playtri Tyler hosts night mountain bike ride to celebrate International Women’s Day

By Kristine Guevara | www.kltv.com

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Six East Texas female cyclists came out on International Women’s Day to do what they love.

“Some people might go to a bar, or might go dancing. We go ride our bikes,” said Lynnette Wood.

Lynnette Wood is a bike mechanic at Playtri. She says mountain biking is a male-dominated sport.

“A lot of time when you go to any mountain bike races, there are many fewer women who race. Many fewer women ride, and I love just seeing women on bikes. No matter whether they’re racing or just out there riding and having fun.”

So Wood decided to start up this event and encourage other women to join in on the sport.

Cat Hammers came along for …
