About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Another GoPro Mount Experiment

Texbiker.net Posted on March 9, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 9, 2023

Today’s bike ride went south and east following the Atascocita- Walden -Spanish Cove route. I didn’t start as early as yesterday but I still pushed the Bolt computer start button at 10:42 AM. I ate breakfast and watched the Tirreno-Adriatico and Paris-Nice bike races before starting my bike ride. Spring like weather continues to hang around making for great bike riding. Weather conditions: start 80 degrees, 68% humidity, dew point 69, partly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph; finish 84 degrees, 57% humidity, dew point 67, partly cloudy, wind S 9 mph gusts 20 mph. This allowed me to wear shorts, arm sleeves, and a short sleeve jersey and be comfortable. I noticed the wind blowing over Lake Houston does have the chill to it since the temperature has been in the 80’s for a week or so.

A surprise encounter on the ride: my friend, Jodi, who rescued me last Friday when I had a flat saw me riding on W. Lake Houston Parkway, pulled over at Kings River Drive and we talked. I am meeting her and Jeff at the Baytown Gator ride on Saturday.

I biked 35.27 miles today, the average distance for the route. My week total now stands at 146.15 miles and my month now totals 267.15 miles, 41% of my 650 mile goal for March. Not to bad for 9 days so far. Saturday I will bike the Gator Ride in Baytown adding 52 miles plus what I bike tomorrow. Below is a summary of rides on the Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove route.

I tried a new position for mounting the GoPro camera above the handlebar stem. This puts it closer to me for sound and removing it for hand shots. But when I shoot video while the GoPro is in the mount the Bolt computer is too close. So I will move the mount back beside the Bolt pointing out front.

Bike Wichita Falls hosting Circle Trail cleanup sessions

by: Markeshia Jackson | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — With warmer weather approaching, more folks will be out walking and biking along the Circle Trail, and that’s why the Bike Wichita Falls group is taking some time to make it shine a little brighter with some cleanups.

“The trail is one of the biggest assets for people that ride bikes of all different levels not just people that ride out on the road but there are so many people that travel by bike on the trail here so it’s our way of giving back and it’s what we get to look at the most whenever we’re riding so we want to help take care of it,” Bike Wichita Falls Co-Chair Becky Raeke said. …

Richardson City Council approves active transportation, parks master plans

By Jackson King | communityimpact.com

… The newly approved Active Transportation Plan, which is designed to connect off-street and on-street infrastructure for nonvehicle transportation, includes increasing the level of comfort for bike riders, creating bike trails that are safe for all ages and abilities, making transit connections within the region, and eliminating gaps in the biking network.

The proposed biking network would total 141 miles by adding 54 miles of bike trails to the 87 miles that already exist within the city. Project Manager Christian Lentz said during a February Council meeting the active transportation plan will allow 96% of all Richardson residents to be located within a five-minute walk, or 0.5 miles, of the active transportation network.

Both plans have been discussed by council since the start of 2022 and are part of a 2023 update for the city’s upcoming comprehensive plan. Updating the comprehensive plan is expected to last through 2024.

Return To The Valley Of The 2″ Deck Screw

Texbiker.net Posted on March 8, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 8, 2023

Noodling around about which route to ride today the one I tried to ride on Friday came to mind quickly. That ride ended when a 2″ deck screw punctured the rear tire on my Cervelo Caledonia bike on the shoulder of FM 1314. Not one to let that deter me from going back I chose the Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst route but I rode the Lynskey Helix bike just because it was in the rotation. No fear in re-engaging and riding through The Valley of the 2″ Deck Screw today but I was going to keep my eyes on the road as I went through the valley.

The ride began at 10:34 AM, the earliest start this week. Previous rides on this route were 34 to 35 miles long. I altered the route a little by not going through Brooklyn Trails and using E. Martin Drive to get to the US59 northbound frontage road. Instead I rode west on E. Knox Street to the frontage road. At Community Drive I turned left to get to Loop 494 rather than using the TX 99 east bound frontage road but returned to US59 on the west bound frontage road from Loop 494. Making the u-turn at Cumberland Blvd. I only rode a short distance into Cumberland in place of going to the west end of the street. I think these alterations reduced the distance to 33.98 mile today. Not enough to quibble about.

Spring weather made for a great bike ride. Weather conditions: start 78 degrees, 71% humidity, dew point 68, mostly cloudy, wind S 5 mph; finish 83 degrees, 61% humidity, dew point 68, partly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph gusts 16 mph. I wore a short sleeve jersey and arm sleeves. I’m not sure when I noticed the wind gusts since the ride direction didn’t point to the SW to much.

Good leg strength today. Some data from the AXS.SRAM.com ride report: 25 rear derailleur shifts, 35×13 gears used 1:39:30 (24.4 miles), 35×15 gears 33:35 (5.5 miles).

Started early solo to avoid the hard early efforts of the ride. Hooked up with Tomer. Then Bobby, Chisholm and Big Pig. Group still hadn’t caught us by Renner and North Star. Tomer suggests that we push it and see how far we can get before they catch us. We hit every light red, and they caught us at Bethany. And then was me on the back of big group on a warm humid night. This was harder than last week. Took a lot of effort to stay on.
