About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

No Reason Cattle Can’t Be Raised In Harris County

Texbiker.net Posted on March 7, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 7, 2023

Another route I haven’t biked in many months came to mind this morning so I chose to ride it. Wheels down at 11:08 AM riding my Cervelo Caledonia and I was off on the Kingwood to Ramsey Road – Huffman route. The last time I used this route was September 6, 2022. That ride was 39.18 miles so I expected today’s ride to be similar. I finished at 2:09 PM after biking 39.32 miles. These miles boosted March mileage to 197.9. That compares to 7 days times 21 miles per day pace to reach my 650 mile goal at 147 miles. So I’m 50 miles ahead.

The video explains why I titled the post. Old Atascocita Road doesn’t look like an urban road.

These are the rides on this route during 2022 and 2023.

Weather conditions: start 76 degrees, 85% humidity, dew point 71, overcast, wind S 8 mph; finish 80 degrees, 71% humidity, dew point 69, mostly cloudy, wind SE 8 mph. I wore a long sleeve jersey and a short sleeve jersey because of the overcast sky and mid 70’s temperature at the start. I was probably over dressed a little at the end of the bike ride.

From the AXS.SRAM.com ride report.

Letters to the Editor — Cyclists, health care, drugs and kids, vouchers, Dallas ISD

www.dallasnews.com

Readers don’t support legalizing the Idaho stop; question the latest move by Walmart regarding health clinics; ask parents to get involved in preventing drug abuse by their kids; don’t support school vouchers; and support Dallas ISD.

‘Idaho stop’ dangerous

Re: “Yield to bicycles — Legalize the Idaho stop to give cyclists safe passage, and make sure drivers know about it,” Wednesday editorial.

Legalizing the “Idaho stop,” which would essentially allow cyclists to disregard stop signs, will lead to more injuries and should not be considered. While it might sound good in theory, in practice human nature will put more cyclists in danger.

This is due to the maneuver commonly known as the …

Four Month Absence Biking Kingwood – SH242 – Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on March 6, 2023 by Rick AnkrumMarch 6, 2023

No flat tire on today’s bike. I rode by the scene of yesterday’s flat tire in Valley Ranch and nothing happened to a tire on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. Praise the Lord!

Today’s bike ride got a later start than I planned, 11:26 AM, but all was good. I watched the Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico races while I ate breakfast. I wanted to ride a different route and my Kingwood – SH242 – Kingwood one came to mind. Looking the route up in SportTracks I saw my last time was October 31, 2022. The average distance was just over 37 miles so this route would help keep my pace towards my mileage goal for the month ahead of schedule. The recent rides show my Cervelo is the bike of choice. I wondered if the construction on SH 242 progressed much during my four month absence. The video gives the answer. One road construction site wrapped up at FM 1485 and Loop 494 with the lanes back to normal. The bridge on Loop 494 over Caney Creek remains closed but construction equipment is there. Are the workers?

Early March weather so far has been favorable for biking and today was no different. The wind was light, the sky overcast to mostly cloudy, and the temperature ranged from 77 at the start to 81 when I finished at 2:24 PM. I wore shorts, a long sleeve jersey and a Pink Floyd short sleeve jersey. I was comfortable except for a couple times when the sun broke through the clouds and heated me up. The weather forecast improved for Saturday and I plan on doing the Gator ride in Baytown for the sixth time.

My legs felt good and turned the pedals strongly. I built my overall average speed up to 14.2 mph and held it there for many miles until I slowed riding back through Kingwood. The front brake disc squealed a few times but nothing like it did before stopping at Kingwood Bicycles on Saturday. The front wheel spun freely when I gave it a flick before the ride to activate the speed sensor.

The Trailist: A San Antonian’s map of the city’s bicycle network takes a transit-oriented approach

by Brendan Gibbons | sanantonioreport.org

David Bemporad’s fascination with trains began at a young age. One of his earliest memories is sitting with his family near the rail line at Thousand Oaks and watching the freight locomotives roll past. At home, he would paint model trains and build elaborate sets.

Despite growing up in car-centric Northeast San Antonio, trips to visit family members in New York City also introduced him to commuter rail and that city’s subway system, with its distinctive maps with color-coded routes and stops. Last month, Bemporad unveiled a similar map he made charting San Antonio’s bicycle network after finishing a graduate program in urban planning and starting work for San Antonio nonprofits focused on making it easier to get around without a car.

He posted his finished product on the …

After boy’s bike stolen, APD surprises him with new one

by: Nabil Remadna | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A boy living at the Helping Hand Home for Children recently had his bike stolen after someone jumped the fence during the day and then rode off with it.

“We came by and met with the kids and reassured them that everything is going to be ok, we know the bike was stolen, but we are going to be out here and patrol all night and you are going to be safe,” said APD detective Wut Tantaksinanukij.

The Helping Hand Home provides a …
