About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Protect Your Skin

Texbiker.net Posted on June 30, 2009 by Rick AnkrumJune 30, 2009

It’s summer and in Texas that means lots of sun and this year even more than usual. In southeast Texas we have been setting temperature records which means plenty of sun. My dermotologist recommends at a sunscreen with a SPF55 or more. The only one I have found with this number or more is Neutrogena UltraSheer Dry Touch Sunblock. I found this at Wal-Mart in a 3.0 ounce tube for $9.92. This sunblock is up to the Texas heat and humidity.

from www.drmirkin.com

  • Non-melanoma skin cancer risk (basal and squamous cell skin cancers) is increased by cumulative sun exposure over a lifetime.
  • Recent data show that a single sunburn may cause a melanoma.
  • It appears that blond and blue-eyed people need less sun exposure to make vitamin D. People with dark skin, or those who become very dark when they tan need far more sun exposure to make vitamin D.

Daily Blog and News Roundup for June 27th

Texbiker.net Posted on June 27, 2009 by Rick AnkrumJune 27, 2009

With the high heat it looks like the blogs and news have been cooked. No postings at blogs or news at other sources.

I am in Dallas at Word Camp Dallas 2009. The University of Texas at Dallas is the host site with over 300 people in attendance. My goal is learn more about using WordPress (this software powers Texbiker.net) and how to better connect with the people who are interested in Texas bicycling.

One thing I want to start including more of are images. Earlier this week I posted the first of several video product reviews.

A bicycling connection to this trip is seeing a very large group of riders this morning on the way to UTD. Richardson Bike Mart is just a block away from the group as they waited for the traffic light to change.

Word Camp Dallas wraps up tomorrow evening so I will not be home until too late to ride. Thanks to the dry weather I have met my mileage goal for June with 2 days to go.
