About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Video: Waco group repairs donated bikes for Baylor graduate, international students

By Ally Kadlubar | www.kwtx.com

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – A ministry group with First Baptist Church Waco is repairing donated bikes for Baylor international and graduate students ahead of the start of the semester.

“The church made available to us the basement here in our education building and sponsors us for this bike ministry,” Larry Gurley said. “We take in bikes that need repair, fix them up, repair them, make them rideable, and donate them to the needy around town.”

Gurley said the group receives many donated bikes from the community, and Baylor donates abandoned bikes to them at the end of the semester.

“Baylor collects all the bicycles that have been abandoned at the end of the semester,” he said. “They hold them for a few weeks to …

San Antonians invited to final meeting about bike network plan

By Edmond Ortiz | communityimpact.com

San Antonio city officials will offer a final open house July 28 regarding the city’s bicycle network plan.

The gist

Although an online survey about the plan closed …

Tough Kookie Foundation bike ride to benefit childhood cancer families

by Sharda James | www.texarkanagazette.com

TEXARKANA, Texas – Katina Levingston, founder of the Tough Kookie Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping breast cancer survivors, is preparing to host her first Childhood Cancer Bicycle Ride.

The Yellow Pedal Out Childhood Cancer Bicycle Ride is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at at Spring Lake Park. The ride will last for about an hour.

The registration fee is $25 per person, and the funds raised will go towards childhood cancer families.

A childhood cancer diagnosis is something that no parent wants to hear. Families often have to travel for their child’s treatment, and parents are frequently forced to take time off work to care for their child. This is where the Tough Kookie Foundation comes in.

“Sometimes you have parents who lose their houses, cars, their jobs or are sleeping in their cars because they don’t have the money for hotels,” Levingston said. …

Harlingen mulling options to extend trail amid homeowner opposition

By Fernando Del Valle | myrgv.com

HARLINGEN — Amid some Parkwood homeowners’ opposition, city officials are planning alternative routes aimed at extending the Arroyo Hike and Bike Trail across its most remote, woody stretch.

For more than a year, the homeowners have been standing up against a city proposal to extend the trail’s third phase from McKelvey Park to the Hugh Ramsey Nature Park area, a 1.1-mile span they argue would run the 6-foot asphalt trail across parts of 22 residents’ backyards along the arroyo.

Launched last year, a $216,632 engineering study aimed at determining the span’s route continues. …

Houston begins auctioning bike-sharing equipment, with online bids for bicycles starting at $10

Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

The city plans to put more than 400 Houston BCycle bikes up for auction over the next several months, along with docking stations and base plates for those stations, after its bike-sharing network shuttered last month.

Before Houston’s bike-sharing network shut down at the end of June, users could take an hourlong ride for as little as $7.25.

Local residents can now own one of the Houston BCycle bikes – many of which are red and equipped with at least one storage basket – likely without having to spend much more for it.

The City of Houston, which launched the nonprofit bike-sharing network in 2012 and maintained ownership of its equipment, began selling the bikes last week as part of its recurring online auctions. Ten traditional pedal bikes went up for bidding last Monday, with starting bids of $10, and will be up for grabs through 9 p.m. Wednesday.

There also is one electric bike on the …

Upcoming Events 6:45pm Fri 16th August – FNR Olympics 6pm Sat 17th August – Atomic TT Series p/b Hammertime Finals Tuesday Nights 6-8:30pm July 23rd to August 13th – Track Racer Development Series Wednesday Nights 4:30-8:30pm July 17th to Aug 28th – Memorial Park Criterium Series (@Memorial Park) Atomic TT Series #3 On Saturday we hosted round 3 of 2024’s Atomic TT Series p/b Hammertime ProShop. Round 4, the final event of the series will be an evening affair on Saturday 17th August, mainly because it’s cooler under the lights and the air is faster!

F200’s After a few good rides, Including Blackhawk Water’s first track race, Alexandra, in her first TT, clocked a 14.40 to occupy the top spot until Addison’s 14:09. A string of riders then went progressively faster including Katie Gibson who’s 13.3 would be the fastest women’s time. Charles Trois then became the only person to go Sub 12s with 11.92. Ted Yang with 12.26 and Darby, 12.32 rounded out the top 3. Sebastian with 12.59 was the top junior.

500m TT After some strong rides Alexandra was first to break the 50s barrier and held the lead until Kevin came through with 45.83. This was gradually improved on by a number of riders including fastest Junior of the day, Tegan with 44.01. Katie was again fastest women and 3rd overall as she shattered the previous top time with 40.73 despite an uncharacteristically questionable start. TJ broke the 40s barrier to secure second fastest behind last man out, Ted who recorded 38.76.

Kilo TT’s Annette got us underway with 1:38 before Eddie went 3s quicker. Dalton, who was 3rd fastest with 1:18 took the mark below 1:20 before Charles 1:15.2 set an even faster mark for the final rider Sebastian who would finish just 0.5s off his pace for 2nd.

Pursuits Eldon got us underway with a 2km IP in which he recorded 3:34.8. Tegan clocked a PR with 3:03.6 the 3rd fastest of the series. Dalton produced a strong 3km IP with a 4:08.2, only Seth has gone faster in this series, after which David took a break from the camera to knock out a 5:52.1 4km IP.

Team Events The trio or Hanna, Annette and Alexandra clocked a solid 1:33.98 to secure a bonus point each in the elite women’s class and Juniors Dalton, Sebastian, Tegan and Addison recorded 5:49.33 securing bonus points also.

Series Standings Charles and Annette both solidified their positions at the top of the Sport & Rookie class however Alexandra now poses a threat in 2nd! There was no changes in either 50+ categories. Kevin and Annette lead the 35-49 groups but there is plenty of scope for others going into the final event. Tegan blasted to the top of the juniors girls standings but a good 3km IP from Gabi St Clair could change that. Elijah still leads the juniors but Sebastian and Dalton made significant inroads. Tegan overtook Katie and now sits 2nd only 2 points behind Jessica in the Elite Women. While Tak overtook me despite neither of us racing but don’t worry I will put that right in August. Charles moved into 7th and Dave Reynolds 8th in the Elite men.

Racer Development Class #1 – Bunch Race Fundamentals and Scratch Races This Tuesday at 6pm myself, Alex Wieslier and Katie Gibson will be hosting a class in which we intend to pass on some of our racing knowledge. The class will compromise of some theory elements and several drills. This week the plan is to go into the following: Phases of a Race Race Impact Factors Scratch Race Rules Pack Skills Strategies & Ways to Win Common Mistakes We’ll finish the class with some races and/or simulated races to put these skills into practice. The class will be charged at the standard training session rate of $5 +$5 for rental bikes if required, free for members, all riders must be track certified and have completed a 2024 Waiver.

There is a chance of rain, if I have to cancel the class I will update the calendar by 4pm Tues. Memorial Park Criteriums After Beryl washed out week 1 Storms greeted riders at the start of week 2! Luckily they cleared just in time for the Junior race to start which was won by 2024 LCYCL graduate Jonathan Sweeten ahead of fellow graduate Peter Wade. Sam Wade, Andrew Wade and Mia Kegel also raced well! Pamela Ferguson was 2nd and took the prime in the womens open behind BellVelo 30 Mile Series Winner Robyn Poulson. Marcos Reyes picked up 3rd in a full M4/5 race while Christofer Perez secured a solid top 10 in the M3/4. Alex Wieslier won the M1/2/3 ahead of BellVelo 60 Mile champion Gabriel Odreman. Racing starts at 4:30pm on Wednesday, see the flyer below for details! Registration

Alkekian Exploits Tak, Logan and Gabi were in action at Jerry Baker Velodrome this weekend with notable rides including Tak getting 4th in the M3 & 35+ Keirins, Logan hitting a F200 PR and Gabi holding her own in a national level elite women’s field containing a number of world class riders. Jessica continues to race in Italy with some strong results in races featuring some of Europe’s top riders. Seth is also working hard in Europe, improving during his road racing stint with Flanders Devo.

Racer Development Series Over four Tuesday nights from July 23rd to August 13th Alkek will be hosting a series of classes during which you can learn how to navigate 4 track race disciplines. There will be input on the differences in how to approach racing these events at different levels and with different fields sizes covering Scratch, Sprints, Elimination and Points races! – More Info
