About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycle Racing Association Receives Racing Support

Texbiker.net Posted on February 4, 2009 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 4, 2009

from Velonews.com

USA Cycling is distributing nearly $360,000 in rebates from license sales to its 34 local associations, the governing body announced on Wednesday.

Local associations receive $10 for every primary adult annual road/track/cyclocross license they sell to a member in their respective geographic areas, according to USA Cycling communications director Andy Lee. They also receive $5 per adult annual add-on license sold.

For the first time, all 34 associations earned rebates based on 2008 sales. For the fourth consecutive year, the Northern California/Nevada Cycling Association was the top earner, qualifying for $36,105, followed by the Southern California/Nevada Cycling Association ($32,210), the New England Bicycle Racing Association ($30,520), the Texas Bicycle Racing Association ($23,225) and the Pennsylvania Cycling Association ($15,495).

In Texas, says Andrew Willis, president of the Texas Bicycle Racing Association, the money helps pay for everything from a pair of FinishLynx finish-line cameras to running a high-school cycling league.

Loblolly Liberator Ride – Nacogdoches, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on February 4, 2009 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 4, 2009

The unique name of the bike ride, Loblolly Liberator, originated from one of the Treatment Center’s employees, a paraplegic who participated in his first bike ride benefit—a 25-mile course—with a hand cycle. “Loblolly” is a type of pine tree that is native to our East Texas area; “liberator” represents the experience of being released.

The bike ride features five different courses (a 10-mile, 30-mile, 53-mile, 77-mile and 100-mile). All proceeds go to fund the NTC.

January Mileage Wrapup

Texbiker.net Posted on February 1, 2009 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 1, 2009

I made my goal and then some for January. I was shooting to beat my 209 January average miles and ended up at 294 total. I even got a good start on beating my February monthly average of 249 with 27 miles for February 1st. While the last week of January was not without its weather challenges I still managed two riding days and only one windtrainer ride. This brings my year to date miles up to 321.

We had a reminder this week to make our hotel reservations for the Hotter’n Hell Hundred thinking it would be early enough but my wife ended up calling most of the hotels in Wichita Falls before finding a room at the Candlewood. Last year we waited too long and ended staying in Henrietta to the south of Wichita Falls. The hotel was nice but the 20 minute drive into town was not very convenient. I spotted a note on the Hotter’n Hell Hundred website that registration for 2009 has been opened. I am not sure why it is necessary to register this early but someone may want a low number or entry into the race.

February weather can fickle in southeast Texas so I will have to grab each mile when the opporunity comes by. I did see a number of riders today on my ride. Most were heading back as I was going out. I almost got caught by rain as it started to sprinkle minutes after I got back from my ride.

Pedal Pushers on Fixing A Flat

Texbiker.net Posted on February 1, 2009 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 1, 2009

Roy and Christine write a long post on fixing flats.

Excerpt:

“Back when I was a kid, bicycles had big tires and tubes. Flats from goat heads were so frequent that to save money, we would just use a tire patch on the tube. Take the wheel off with a pair of pliers, use a screw driver to pry the tire off the wheel, and pull the tube out. You would pump up the tube and dip it in a pail of water, rotating it until you would see little air bubbles escaping from the tube. You have found the hole. Mark the hole by poking a match stick in the hole. After drying off the tube, you would scrape the tube with the top of the tire patch can (looked like a carrot grater) to roughen the surface, apply the glue, strip off the protecting strip from the patch, and hold the patch on tightly until the glue dried. If you were smart, you would test the tube again in the pail of water to see if it still leaked.”
