About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Wind, And A 10 Minute Unplanned Break In The Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on February 20, 2023 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 20, 2023

It was a dramatic finish at the UAE tour as I watched before today’s bike ride. There would be no dramatic finish for my ride but there was a 10 minute unplanned break. The weather forecast calls for warm weather this week and I’m ready for it. I aired up the tires on my Cervelo Caledonia and wiped off some dirt from the last ride. Getting dressed and walking the Cervelo to the driveway I pressed the start button on the Bolt computer at 11:12 AM and rolled away. I chose my Atascocita – Walden – Spanish Cove Drive route riding south and east because I rode to the north yesterday. I rode this route last week too. Before the ride I needed 58 miles to reach my road mile goal of 300 miles for the month. Today’s ride would get me close to that. I rode 35.5 miles today putting me at 278 miles. One more ride should do it.

Wind was going to be a challenge on the bike ride. At the start it was from the SW at 13 mph with 23 mph gusts. The challenge would be riding from Huffman back to Kingwood into the headwind. Most of the ride to FM 2100 at FM 1960 I did not confront the headwind but the 3+ miles west from FM 2100 was into the headwind. I managed to use the 35×13 gears until I got to marina on the east side of the lake but riding over the lake I shifted to the 35×15 because my legs could not push the pedals. Even after shifting to the 35×15 my speed fell to 9 – 11 mph. Once I reached Atascocita shores Drive and turned right the wind came at my left side. This was good but around 28.5 miles those heavy clouds you can see in the video turned to rain. I rode about 1/2 of a mile in the rain until I moved to the shelter at Kings Crown Estates. I waited there for about 10 minutes for the rain to stop and the streets to dry a little.

On Kings River Drive the pavement was wet and then drying. This alternated as I rode across the San Jacinto River until I crossed Kingwood Drive where the streets were dry until I finished. Back home at 2:11 PM I washed the Cervelo to clean all of the splattered mud. I don’t really like mud.

For some reason the power meter didn’t record watts from 29.02 miles to 31.26 miles. 29.02 miles is about where I stopped to wait out the rain and 31.26 miles is around where I turned right off of W. Lake Houston Parkway onto Magnolia Cove. I check some previous rides and there weren’t any voids in recorded watts.

Weather conditions: start 74 degrees, 79% humidity, dew point 67, mostly cloudy, wind SW 13 mph gusts 23 mph; finish 77 degrees, 76% humidity, dew point 69, mostly cloudy, wind W 10 mph gusts 18 mph.

GoPro Experiment. Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch

Texbiker.net Posted on February 19, 2023 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 19, 2023

After getting home from church and watching a cyclocross race I got ready to ride outside. I chose my Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch route but modified it a little. The ride started at 1:50 PM. I added a loop going by Kingwood High School and later rather than riding east on Valley Ranch Bend Drive I went through Forest Colony to US59. This was the second time I rode this route this year but today was a longer distance. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike. I tried a different mount for the GoPro camera on the handle bar stem but it moved from the road vibrations so it won’t work.

2-19-2023 SportTracks Ride History Forest Cove-Oakhurst-Valley Ranch

The history for this year and last shows I rode this route 7 times, all on my two different Lynskey bikes. I didn’t check but I think these were on Sundays.Today was the longest ride in miles.

The weather was pleasant and at the start of the ride the wind was from the SW at 7 mph but when I finished it had increased to 12 mph with 20 mph gusts. No wonder it was hard pedaling into the headwind on the way back to KIngwood from Forest Colony. I dressed comfortably with shorts, long sleeve jersey and wind jacket. A mostly cloudy sky warmed it up to 75 by the time I finished at 4:08 PM. My legs handled the wind well as I built my overall average speed up to 14.0 mph and held it until I got back into Kingwood. In the video several other cyclists were out as well.

So far I have been on the bike every day for a total of 1147 miles and I lead all of my previous years YTD mileage by at least 120 miles and most years by larger margins. This week I rode 181.74 miles. 4 Zwift days and 3 road days.

Texas A&M administration, Veo ask students to stop Veo bike "pranks"

Author: Matthew Gromala | www.kagstv.com

NO WAY THEY DID IT AGAIN pic.twitter.com/zaGHMaibAR

— DON’T RANK US Barstool Texas A&M (@BarstoolTexasAM) February 10, 2023

An inside joke among some students appears to have gone too far.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Veo, a mobility company that provides Texas A&M students with different methods of transportation, has appeared in the news for — oddly enough — not being fully grounded; and the vice president of Student Affairs has had enough.

While the service is used by many Aggies to cross a school as large as A&M, some students have chosen to leave the service’s bikes and scooters in odd places.

If you drive around College Station, you might find a stray Veo ride seemingly abandoned on the side of the road, clearly not where it’s supposed to be parked.

However, that’s not where …

Meet the 11-year-old student-athlete named Houston going viral for large mural in downtown

By Erica Simon | abc13.com

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — If you’ve been in downtown Houston lately, you may have noticed some larger-than-life murals on the sides of buildings and businesses. The little boy depicted on a bike at the corner of Prairie and Main has gone viral, and inspired people of all backgrounds.

ABC13 tracked down the little Third Ward legend.

"How do you feel seeing yourself on the side of a building?" we asked. The 11-year-old Houston Atlee said, "Good. Like, I’m on Google. I searched myself up in math class."

Atlee may be soft-spoken and humble, but he has every reason to brag. He makes all A’s and …

Memorial Park land bridge opening prompts call for better bike access

Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

A cyclist looks to cross Washington Avenue just north of Interstate 10 in Houston. The tall trees in the distance are part of Memorial Park.

Thousands of Houstonians visited Memorial Park last Saturday for the grand opening of 100 acres of prairie as well as two land bridges that cross over Memorial Drive. The new amenities, which took about two years and $70 million to construct, provide enhanced mobility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists within the city’s largest urban green space.

So the unveiling was especially appealing to cycling enthusiasts. More than 300 people took advantage of a bicycle valet service offered by BikeHouston, a local cycling advocacy nonprofit.

And according to BikeHouston executive director Joe Cutrufo, the hottest …

BikeHouston asking Memorial Park for more accessible paths for those who enjoy biking

By Lileana Pearson | abc13.com

800 people have signed the change.org petition asking city leaders and planners to finally make the park accessible by extending bike and walking paths from the bayous.

HOUSTON, Park (KTRK) — Memorial Park is a hub for people to walk, bike, and get moving, but getting to the trails inside the park can be tricky unless you’re willing to drive.

Some park visitors are lucky.

"It’s wonderful being so close to the park. It gets us out. It gets us moving," Colleen Mahan said.

Mahan lives blocks from a pedestrian-friendly Memorial Park entrance.

But many, even those who live close enough, must get creative if they want to enjoy the park amenities. …

A chill north wind was blowin but the spring was comin On

Brent Wells | strava.com

Oh my goodness, I had completely expected to ride with a group of guys leaving from the city park in Comfort this morning, but everybody bailed at the last minute because of the weather. I was very blessed to be able to ride with the Cyclones group who were riding to Floresville and back from Espada Park. I jumped in my truck, and had it not been for Google maps, I never would’ve found my way there. Of course I am extremely thankful to the gentleman who came, but mostly thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for healing me, and enabling me to return to this sport, that I love, and for yet another safe ride

I couldn’t believe there was actually an old railroad bridge out here, so I basically insisted that we had to stop and take a group picture? thankfully all of the gentleman who were super kind, gladly obliged.

Edinburg installing lights along hike-and-bike trail

by: Alejandra Yañez | www.valleycentral.com

EDINBURG, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Edinburg has broken ground at the city’s hike-and-bike trail as crews prepare to make lighting improvements along the existing trail.

Edinburg’s hike-and-bike trail is located between Freddy Gonzalez Drive and Cano Street within 7th and 8th Avenue.

At the Cenizo Park groundbreaking Friday morning, crews began installing 115 solar lights and reflective pavement markings at the intersections along the corridor.

The lighting upgrades are a collaboration between Edinburg and the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization project funded by the Texas Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program. …

Zwift Watopia Triple Flat Loops

Texbiker.net Posted on February 18, 2023 by Rick AnkrumFebruary 18, 2023

When I started today’s Zwift ride I didn’t expect to set a Zwift personal record for the route. I chose Watopia Triple Flat Loops because of the distance and 515 feet of climbing. For about half of the ride my route pace partner was close by but then the gap between started increasing and by the finish I was 2:05 ahead of the best time out of the 5 previous times, 1:08:41. Some of the other rides were slightly longer. Strava says it was the 2nd fastest while Zwift differed. I think Zwift only goes back 90 days.

Strava 2nd fastest time on Rebel Route: Triple Flat Loops (1:08:04).

I got caught up in several robo pacer rides and Coco groups as they raced by me.

I rode Zwift because it was in the low 50’s when I started at noon. Tomorrow warmer weather arrives. I rode in the rain in Watopia for part of the ride. Watopia weather: Rainy, Temperature 77, Humidity 89%, Feels like 78, Wind Speed 4.8 mi/h.
