About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Bayou City Outdoors Farmer’s Market on Bikes or Skates – Houston, TX

Texbiker.net Posted on January 11, 2009 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 11, 2009

Saturday, February 21, 2009, 08:00 AM
Onion Creek Cafe
3106 White Oak Blvd.
Houston, TX 77007
We have several Farmer Markets right here in the middle of the city, which bring in local organic produce every Saturday. Bring your backpack to carry what you purchase, and let’s shop the markets on our bikes! We meet for coffee and then take an easy tour of 3 to 5 markets around the city.

We use side streets, trails and residential roads for this approximately 15 mile, 3 hour ride including generous stops. This can be a cold ride during the winter in Houston so please make sure you are wearing layers and drink plenty of fluids.  Bike helmets are required, and an extra pack to carry you purchases and a hat is a good idea.

Juli Fiocca Writes About Closet Training

Texbiker.net Posted on January 10, 2009 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 10, 2009

Juli Fiocca lives in Austin and her house has a closet big enough to set up her trainer. Now my closet barely holds my bike clothes let alone a trainer wiht room to mount, ride and dismount. Juli writes about her experience as she recovers from an injury at the Team Timex Blog.

An excerpt from her post:

When we moved into our house here in Austin, Texas, one of the first things I noticed was that I could set up my trainer ‘permanently’ even without a basement. (That Texas rock is hard!) In our office, we have a closet large enough to fit a trainer and bike. Although I reserved it for emergencies, as you can almost always ride outside in Austin, it has come in handy. And although I digress, I did spend some serious hours on it last spring when we got a freeze during a week with some particularly long rides… let’s just say that I watched all the Star Wars movies (what a geek) in 3 days.

Trimble Racing Attacks The Torture Test 2009

Texbiker.net Posted on January 9, 2009 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 9, 2009

James and Nate did the 2009 Torture Test (official name Excruciation Exam) on January 3, 2009.  This is a mountain bike marathon race that combines approx. 30 miles of single track with 50 miles of rual country roads in a grueling test of endurance.  The race starts out at Bluff Creek ranch in Warda, Texas (about 30 miles south of Austin). You do a loop of the Bluff Creek single track, then hit the back roads for a scenic 30 mile ride to Rocky Hill ranch in Smithville, Texas. Then you do two ten mile loops of the famous Rocky Hill ranch single track, then head back up a big hill for the 20+ mile return to Bluff Creek via a different route.

Read more and see all of the pictures at the Trimble Racing website.

The Vogel Family In McAllen

Texbiker.net Posted on January 9, 2009 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 9, 2009

Al, one of the Team McAllen members, had managed to arrange an interview with the local TV news crew. And we had managed to make contact with a local middle school teacher who invited us to present to her class. The two were destined to meet.

The cameras rolled as we pulled into Liberty Middle School, said a quick hello to the principal, then dashed off to the classroom to talk with the kids. After so many months away, it was great to be back in a classroom!

The Vogel family left June 8, 2008 for a 2 1/2 year bicycle trip traversing the Pan-American Highway from Alaska to Argentina.
