About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas State Bicycle Survey Reveals Danger Concerns, Cycling Perceptions

Texbiker.net Posted on December 20, 2008 by Rick AnkrumDecember 20, 2008

from sciencedaily.com

Bicyclists in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio are more concerned with being involved in vehicle crashes compared to bicyclists in other Texas cities, according to a survey conducted by the Center for Transportation Research at The University of Texas at Austin.

“This is quite intuitive, given the high levels of traffic congestion in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio,” said Professor Chandra Bhat, who spearheaded the survey and is one of the world’s foremost authorities on travel behavior.

In addition, almost 70 percent of the survey respondents feel bicycling is “very dangerous” or “somewhat dangerous” in terms of traffic accidents. In contrast, only 21 percent of respondents feel bicycling is “somewhat dangerous” or “very dangerous” in the context of crime.

Bikes for Goodness Sake Foundation

Texbiker.net Posted on December 20, 2008 by Rick AnkrumDecember 20, 2008

Earlier this week I was listening to The Fredcast podcast. The host, David Bernstein, interviewed Mark Smith about the orgina and purpose of the Bikes for Goodness Sake Foundation. According the Bikes for Goodness Sake website, “BFGS coordinates efforts with local sponsors, media, and bike shops to give that feeling to underprivileged children in your community. If you have a bike shop in your community, then you can easily help give such children in your town that special gift of goodness called a bike.”

On December 20, 2008 Bikes for Goodness Sake is working the 12 Bike Shops around Texas and the Texas National Guard to give 600 brand new bike-shop-quality bikes to the children of deployed or deploying soldiers.  Each bike and helmet will cost $142.

Do you remember your first bike?

Do you remember that feeling you had with your first bike?

Please share that feeling with a child; a child whose parents are in, or going to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Start a ripple that turns into a wave of generosity and goodwill from 50,000 people to these children.  Just $2 from each of us gives a child a memory that will last a lifetime – that memory of a first bike.

BFGS is working with the Texas Military Forces State Family Program to give 50 bikes and helmets to the children of deploying soldiers in Dallas, Fort Worth, Temple, Austin, Tyler, San Antonio, Houston, Lubbock, El Paso, Laredo, Weslaco, and Corpus Christi for a total of 600 bikes and helmets in the state of Texas.

New City of Austin Transportation Department to Expand Bike Lanes

    Texbiker.net Posted on December 13, 2008 by Rick AnkrumDecember 13, 2008

According to Austin’s Community Impact Newspaper, the City of Austin has tasked a new City department with studying the impact of adding bike lanes to city streets, to improve transportation flow and decrease the environmental impact of vehicles on the city and its infrastructure.

Creating continuous bike lanes throughout Austin is another project on which Howard Lazarus and Rob Spillar are collaborating, armed with recommendations from the city’s Street Smarts Task Force.
