About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

from KTRE.com

Over 72 riders cycled their way into East Texas tonight.  No, they aren’t just taking an afternoon ride on the bike.  They are the Cycle For Life bikeriders.

They have been on the road for over 10 days now.  This is part of a long journey that started back on October 14th in Halifax, Nova Scotia and will finish in just a couple more days in Austin, Texas.  That equates to over 2600 miles for these bikers.

Adventure Cycling Association Reports Strong Growth for FY08

Texbiker.net Posted on October 23, 2008 by Rick AnkrumOctober 23, 2008

Adventure Cycling Association — North America’s largest cycling organization — reports that in FY08 its membership and sales programs enjoyed the largest leaps in activity that they have experienced in a decade. With over 44,000 current members, and a reputation as an expert on cycling maps and bicycle travel gear, the organization believes that this stellar performance underscores other national trends that suggest more people than ever are integrating bicycling into their lives.

“We haven’t had this type of growth in new members since the early 1990’s. It’s very exciting to have so many more Americans inspired to travel by bicycle. This is why Adventure Cycling exists,” says Julie Huck, membership director. She adds, “Whether it’s because of last year’s gas price increases, overall issues with the economy, or health and environmental concerns, more and more day-to-day cyclists are realizing that bicycle travel is a fairly simple next step.”

In FY08 Adventure Cycling saw a 10.5% increase in inquiries (people requesting information about the organization) and a 12.2% jump in new memberships. Total memberships grew nearly 5%, peaking at 44, 500 members at the end of September.

Bicycle officers making a difference

Texbiker.net Posted on October 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumOctober 22, 2008

from The Seguin Gazette-Enterprise

by Ron Maloney

Imagine this job on a sunny fall day.

You ride your Fuji mountain bike up and down the streets of residential subdivisions, seeing up-close and personal what’s going on — and getting to know the people there, while also getting a little exercise.

If things are slow, you might be able to fill a little time checking out kid’s bikes — or maybe even getting into a bike race with a couple of 10-year-old boys.

If it doesn’t sound like much of a job, don’t be fooled, because it’s the job of three police officers who say it helps them learn their community and the folks in it first-hand — and lets the public learn about the police as well, which is the goal of the bicycle patrol unit now nearing a year of service at the Cibolo Police Department.
