About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Medical Association to Give Free Helmets

Texbiker.net Posted on October 1, 2008 by Rick AnkrumOctober 1, 2008

from The Houston Chronicle
By ALLAN TURNER

Beginning Saturday in Huntsville, the Texas Medical Association and associated sponsors will distribute hundreds of free helmets to children and teens in the Houston area as part of its Hard Hats for Little Heads Program.

Free helmets will be distributed in Conroe on Oct. 10-12, Houston on Oct. 11 and Sugar Land on Oct. 25.

Texas Medical Association outreach director Tammy Wishard said 45,000 helmets have been given away in Texas since the program began in 1994.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that, on average, 80 children are killed annually in bicycle accidents. As many as 250,000 children under 16 are injured each year in bike mishaps.

500 Riders Start the NuStar Conquer the Coast Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 28, 2008 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 28, 2008

from the Corpus Christi Caller-Times
By Mike Baird

A whistle screeched about 10:40 a.m. Saturday as Edward Solis of San Antonio whirred across the finish line at the fifth annual NuStar Conquer the Coast bicycle race.

“I took some chances, and it worked out,” said Solis, 39, after slipping his finisher’s medal for the 65-mile ride over his helmet before dismounting his bike. “The last 10 miles were pretty challenging.”

Endurance cyclists fight sleep at 500-mile time trials

Texbiker.net Posted on September 28, 2008 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 28, 2008

CLEBURNE — Talk about pulling an all-nighter.

For competitive 500-mile riders at the Texas Time Trials, the goal is to sleep as little as possible during the 48 hours or less they are on their bicycle.

Vickie Tyer came into the event expecting to go sleepless because she wanted to finish the 500-mile ride in 38 hours.

“My theory was to go straight through without stopping to sleep,” said Tyer, 54, who lives in Grandview and works at Fort Worth’s John Peter Smith hospital. “I had it figured out that that’s where I’d be if I didn’t sleep.”

Waco Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation Gives Bikes to Police

Texbiker.net Posted on September 25, 2008 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 25, 2008

from the Waco Tribune-Herald

By Regina Dennis

Some local cities will soon see more officers patrolling the streets on two wheels instead of four.

The Waco Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation donated 10 mountain bikes to five Texas police departments Wednesday. Law enforcement departments in Bellmead, Woodway, Tyler, Abilene and at Abilene Christian University each received two bikes, valued at $800 each and equipped with strobe lights, water bottles and a carrying case for police items.

“It’s in support of what you strive to do, to provide the safety and security of your communities that you serve, of the clients that you serve, even of your own families,” Waco Scottish Rite Chairman Claude Ervin told representatives of the departments at a presentation ceremony at the Lee Lockwood Library and Museum.
