About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Dallas Rider’s Friends Promote Safety

Texbiker.net Posted on August 17, 2008 by Rick AnkrumAugust 17, 2008

from the Dallas Morning News

By TY A. ALLISON / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News

Paul Jerde’s bike ride around White Rock Lake turned tragic when a lightweight pickup struck him June 14.

Mr. Jerde, 44, suffered a severe head injury, three fractured ribs and a punctured right lung. While his recuperation is long term, friends are making his legacy immediate.

His wife, Patty Jerde, said family, friends and his co-workers at MasonBaronet, a marketing communications company where he serves as creative director, offered to help in any way they could.

Bikers’ Road Rights Get Attention, Maybe

Texbiker.net Posted on August 14, 2008 by Rick AnkrumAugust 14, 2008

Bud Kennedy’s article in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (see my post on August 3rd) seems to have raised the attention of how Texas roads are not biker friendly. Today Dale Robertson in the Houston Chronicle Cycling Notebook devoted two-thirds of the column to bikers fighting for our road rights. There have been numerous bloggers take up the cause as well.

I am not sure we bikers know the law any better than some law enforcement officers. I once was instructed by a deputy sheriff to ride on the left side of the road into the oncoming traffic. After he drove away I quickly moved back to the right side of the road. It is not rare to see bicyclists riding on the wrong side of the road or running stop signs. (I am guilty of running some stop signs.)

Some drivers seem to enjoy scaring bikers as we ride the road. More than once I had a car drive close and the passenger scream at the tops of their lungs or beat on the side of the car trying to scare or something. I have wondered what they would do if I fell over or rode into the ditch.

Why do drivers have a problem with bicyclists? There are probably too many to list but I think the major problem is impatience. They are in a hurry and bicyclists slow them down. You can see this when drivers run red lights so they don’t have to wait for the next green.
