About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Mobility councils support extensive lane conversions despite concerns

by Dylan Ebs | www.austinmonitor.com

A proposal to convert a lane on every city-owned main road into a bus or bike lane within five years has received support from mobility advocates, who passed a recommendation calling on City Council to consider the plan.

Backed by Safe Streets Austin, the CityLeap plan looks to decrease the number of cars on the road by converting lanes on arterial roads – those with two or more lanes in each direction – for protected use by bikes and buses. Advocates hope the plan will help the city reach its goal of increasing the percentage of trips made by public transit and other carless modes to 50 percent by 2030.

During a joint meeting between the …

Memorial Park MTB Speed Challenge Series – Houston, TX

www.facebook.com

UPDATE ON THE RACE: So we are going to have to postpone the first race that was going to be scheduled for this Thursday. And most likely from the looks of it and weather forecast this weekend. We will more than likely have to postpone race number 2 next Thursday. We are not cancelling the races. We are just postponing them a few weeks back. So MPC can get the park back in working condition. As many of you obviously know, the park was hit hard by our mean friend Beryl. This is from MPC. At this point, we have no clear timeline on when the Bayou Wilds trails will be safe to reopen. We …

By B. Kay Richter | www.mrt.com

Lynbee Klein’s experience with the Bike MS ride (Cactus & Crude Ride) came approximately 12 years ago when she met someone diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at her church.

“He is the one that connected me when the job position was open with the MS Society,” she recalled.

As one of the organizers of the event, she said that this is the 35th anniversary ride within the Permian Basin.

“We have a lot of corporate oil teams,” Klein said during a phone interview with the Reporter-Telegram. “I would say that about 75 percent of our riders are from the Permian Basin area.”

For Saturday’s ride, Klein said there are about 200 riders who are registered to participate this year. …

Video: WFISD, TxDOT teach kids bike safety as Hotter N’ Hell race approaches

by: Aaron Gonders | www.texomashomepage.com

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — Wichita Falls is largely a cycling city because of the Hotter n’ Hell Hundred. With the bike race just around the corner, more bikers and cars will crowd city streets, meaning it’s the perfect time for Tish Beaver with TxDOT and the WFISD to teach kids proper bike safety.

“The younger we can catch those folks and influence them as soon as possible, the better,” Beaver said. “In fact, when the young people are on their trikes or their training wheels, that’s almost the best time to get a hold of them and teach them new things because it’s not so stressful.” …

El Paso cyclists advocate for better maintenance of the city’s bike lanes

by Lizabeth Dueweke | www.kfoxtv.com

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14) — Cyclists in El Paso have a lot to love: year-round sunshine, mountainous terrain, and of course, lifelong friendships. As enthusiasm for the sport grows, the city says it’s investing in its bike infrastructure.

KFOX14 spoke with Anna Mesa-Zendt, El Paso’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager, who said when the city first adopted its bike plan almost a decade ago, El Paso had just 140 miles of bike lanes. Today, that number stands at 450 miles and continues growing.

"We set the goal in 2016 to become one of the …

District bicycle plan pilot

www.txddot.gov

The State of Texas’ on-system transportation network – roads owned, operated, and managed by TxDOT – connects communities, regions, and destinations within and outside of Texas. While many bikeways are planned and funded at the local level, TxDOT works with local communities to develop bikeway networks integrated with the state system to improve safety, connectivity, and access within and between TxDOT districts.

TxDOT is working to develop regional plans to further provide safe, thoughtfully designed well-maintained facilities for bicyclists within each district and between districts, providing connectivity across the state. This is the next step for the state to plan more effectively for this mode of travel and develop an approach that can be applied across Texas.

Currently the focus is on Bryan, Pharr, Laredo, and San Antonio districts.

The plan analyzes the needs for bicycle infrastructure on the state highway system, prioritizes locations for bicycling improvements, and …
