About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texas Bicycling, Is It Too Dangerous?

Texbiker.net Posted on August 3, 2008 by Rick AnkrumAugust 3, 2008

Bud Kennedy writes in The Fort Worth Star Telegram on Sunday, August 3, about the increased traffic in Parker County and the danger this could bring to the cyclists as they ride the scenic hills.

An excerpt:

“It’s a great place to ride for the beautiful scenery,” said Brent Baker, a college official and director of the Peach Pedal, the popular annual Parker County Peach Festival ride. “But it’s also getting more dangerous. The cars and trucks are coming fast.”

In a year when more Texans than ever are parking their Suburbans and buying bicycles for commuting or errands, more cyclists are jockeying with drivers for room on the road.

101 Degrees Ahead for the Biscuits & Gravy Rotary Ride for Hunger

Texbiker.net Posted on August 3, 2008 by Rick AnkrumAugust 3, 2008

BY SUN CHA , Special to the Standard-Times

It’s expected to reach 101 degrees, but Sunday’s temperature won’t deter bicycle enthusiasts from riding up to 100 miles to help fight hunger in the Concho Valley.

As of Friday morning, 30 people had registered for the annual Biscuits & Gravy Rotary Ride for Hunger, said Margaret Charlesworth, ride director. More will register today and Sunday morning before the race.

…”Everybody rides across the (O.C. Fisher) dam,” she said. “Isn’t that just a gorgeous sight? People from out of town just can’t believe the spectacular scenery that we’ve got here. … They get up to top of the hill and they see miles and miles of Texas. It’s just like the commercial.”

Jim Quinn: Promoter of the Texas Time Trial Championships

Texbiker.net Posted on August 2, 2008 by Rick AnkrumAugust 2, 2008

from The Houston Chronicle Cycling Notebook (link to the full story)

by Dale Robertson

…To say that Quinn fell hard for cycling is something of an understatement…

…For Quinn, a tax accountant by day, long leisurely rides eventually gave way to all-out racing. He wound up promoting the Texas Time Trial because: “I got tired of driving up to Dallas.” He found the course out of Pattison to be perfect because it’s mostly flat, so he submitted his proposal and won out.

This is the fifth time the state championships have been held there.
