About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

from The Abilene Reporter News

By Grace Broyles

While the early morning mist was still hovering in southern Taylor County, more than 200 bicycle riders took off in stages for the Tour de Gap bicycle race Saturday from the Old Settlers Grounds in Buffalo Gap.

The 70-mile riders went first at 8 a.m. followed by the 48-, 25-, and 10-mile riders. Within 10 minutes, all were heading south on FM 89 on their various routes.

Biketown, one of the main sponsors of Tour de Gap over the years, was running the tour this year for the first time.

Bicycle Commuters Need Better Maps

Texbiker.net Posted on July 25, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJuly 25, 2008

Today the Associated Press ran a story about bikers and walkers needing maps tailored to their specific traits. Google, Mapquest and Yahoo maps cater to vehicle traffic but not the bike and pedestrian variety.

Patrick Walters wrote, “Pedestrians need sidewalks, but don’t have to abide by one-way streets. Walkers and bikers can cut through paths or trails not meant for cars, but they must avoid highways. Bikers, unlike walkers, need to think about whether a road is paved, and are prohibited from sidewalks in some cities.”

Google maps just launched walking directions and Mapquest has a feature that avoids highways.
