About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Christina Smith: Pro Road & Mountain Biker

Texbiker.net Posted on July 20, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJuly 20, 2008

By Brad McDonnell / Staff Writer, Denton Record-Chronicle

The 34-year-old Denton resident started out as strictly a mountain biker, turning pro in 2005 and racing on a national circuit. She soon realized, however, that living and training in Texas would not allow her to reach her full potential, so Smith elected to take on road racing.

“I am not saying it’s easier,” Smith said of road racing compared to mountain biking. “But you can be a professional road cyclist living in Texas and compete at the highest level and be competitive and be a contender.”

9 Young Cyclists Go to Vermont for National Championships

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2008

By Bill Oram / AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

Three years ago, the future of the youth mountain biking team at the Camacho Center was uncertain.

Someone had broken into the mobile storage shed behind the center, stealing 25 bikes valued at about $200 apiece. More than a dozen young cyclists were temporarily without wheels — until community support poured in. Within a month, the fleet had been replenished…

…This week, marking a complete turnaround from 2005’s difficulties, nine team members traveled to Vermont to compete in the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships.

Texas cyclists to ride 3,300 miles

Texbiker.net Posted on July 18, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJuly 18, 2008

By Natalia Ciolk, dailytexanonline.com

Six Texas cyclists are traveling across the country to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The 33-day, 3,300-mile journey from San Diego to Washington, D.C., began July 1 and included a stop at Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop in Austin Wednesday.

Each rider has been affected by cancer in different ways, and all were inspired to hit the road.

“Our basic premise is that we all have a connection with cancer,” said former Livestrong Challenge rider Joe Haeggquist, who as a teenager lost his best friend to leukemia.

Another report from kfdm.com (Beaumont, TX)

It’s a record that’s never been accomplished before…. riding a bicycle 33-hundred miles in 33 days.

By doing so… six Southeast Texans hope to break a world record but that’s not their main goal.

Six Southeast Texas cyclists got to thank Beaumont in person for supporting their mission. Today, they’re joined by 45 other Southeast Texans for encouragement as they make the half way point in their journey. They’re biking across the USA raising money for the fight against cancer.
