About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Riding a Bike Can Improve Your Life

Texbiker.net Posted on July 15, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJuly 15, 2008

LESLIE GARCIA / The Dallas Morning News points out five ways riding a bike can make your life better. While these five reasons are okay I would hope there is more substance for riding a bike than what she lists.

Progress or Regress?

Texbiker.net Posted on July 15, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJuly 15, 2008

Cargo bikes are alive and well in Austin according to this article from the Austin American-Statesman. While the rest of the world is trying to move away from utility bikes some in the US are moving to them. I suspect the high price of gasoline is the force behind this movement.

Pedaling Across the West Texas Mountains

Texbiker.net Posted on July 14, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJuly 14, 2008

Tumbleweed Smith writes about his riding in the west Texas mountains with his grandson for Tumbleweed’s birthday.

from the Midland Reporter-Telegram

It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time: ride my bicycle through some Texas mountains. My son, Kevin, had been wanting to do it for sometime, too.

We decided to do it, finally, after years of just talking about it. And we decided to do it on my birthday.

On the way to the mountain country, we stopped at Peyton’s Bikes in Midland and picked up some equipment for the trip. I bought a nifty mirror for my handlebars, some bike shorts and a pair of riding gloves.

We decided to make a family vacation out of it. On the afternoon before the ride, six of us checked into the Maverick Inn in Alpine. We swam, relaxed, had a delicious meal and later that evening looked at the stars through powerful telescopes at the McDonald observatory.

Bar Taping Tips

Texbiker.net Posted on July 10, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJuly 10, 2008

The RoadBikeRider.com Newsletter Issue No. 351 – 07/10/08 offers some tips for replacing the handlebar tape on your bike. I know I have spent a few hours trying to get the overlap just right and the tension tight enough to withstand the grip of bicycling gloves.

Uncle Al’s column has ten steps to help you. One of the things I have noticed, and Uncle Al confirms: a new tape color changes the look of your bike. I replaced the stock yellow tape with black speckled tape and have a new look.
