About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Reward yourself with a fully supported bike ride on quiet country roads through some of the most spectacular fall scenery Texas has to offer. The Texas Hill Country River Region Classic starts at 8:00 AM, Saturday, October 11, 2008, from Garner State Park and follows the Frio and Sabinal rivers plus climbs the ridge that divides them. Route choices include 34, 52, 68 and 94 miles with well-stocked rest stops about every 10 miles.

The River Region Classic is an official event of the Texas Hill Country River Region. To preserve the enjoyability of participants, the River Region Classic will be limited to 600 riders.

Staging ground for events is the Shady Meadows camping area of Garner State Park.

A Fine Wire Stops A Wheel

Texbiker.net Posted on June 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJune 22, 2008

Last Thursday I was on my usual route across the McKay Causeway over Lake Houston. This area is where I have most of my flats. Lately most flats have been the result of a fine silver wire sticking through the tire and into the the tube. The difficult part about this is finding the culprit. If you ride very far after the puncture the wire bends off or wears down and you cannot spot the problem. I have patched a tube thinking I had found the problem only to re-puncture the tire with the wire still stuck in the tire casing.

Now the question, where does this wire come from? My theory; the steel wire in radial tires. I see tire chunks along the road from radial tires. But how do the little pieces of wire come to be?

Do you have a theory or guess?

People Adopt Bikes To Get To Work

Texbiker.net Posted on June 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJune 22, 2008

I don’t know about you but I am beginning to see more and more stories about people riding bicycles to work. With gas at or above $4 per gallon whatever was holding people back from riding a bike to work seems to be getting pushed aside.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram ran this story, “More workers are riding bikes to work to sidestep high gas prices” online today.

What have you seen?
