About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Texbiker.net Posted on May 29, 2008 by Rick AnkrumMay 29, 2008

from The Southeast Texas Record

By Marilyn Tennissen

“It’s time again for hundreds of cyclists to take the roads, but they won’t only be riding for fun and exercise but also to raise money for a program that provides free legal services to those in need.

After successfully raising almost $50,000 in the last two years, the third annual Spindletop Spin will be held June 7 to benefit the Jefferson County Pro Bono Program.”

Helmets Save Heads

Texbiker.net Posted on May 29, 2008 by Rick AnkrumMay 29, 2008

from KXAN.com

“Health experts are using a new bicycle injury study to push for a city helmet ordinance.

“The odds of suffering a head injury without wearing a helmet, is twice as great than with a helmet,” said Dr. Pat Crocker of Dell Children’s Hospital. “So the helmet has been protective.”

Austin may get a helmet ordinance.

Intoxicated Bicyclists 3.6 Times More Likely to Injure Head

Texbiker.net Posted on May 29, 2008 by Rick AnkrumMay 29, 2008

from the Austin American-Statesman

By Mary Ann Roser
AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF

“Ever drink and ride?

Emergency medicine doctors for the Seton Family of Hospitals said it’s not uncommon for people in Austin to hit downtown-area bars, then hop on their bicycles — behavior they strongly discouraged Wednesday.

Preliminary data for a study they plan to submit for publication next month found that one in five people they treated in a year’s time for bike-related injuries at the University Medical Center at Brackenridge were drinking and riding — and almost always without a helmet”

from kbmt12.com

by Christina Hernandez

“This is a remarkable story of a brave young woman from right here in Southeast Texas.

She just finished with a long bicycle trek, but not just for exercise…to help those suffering from cancer.

It started over two weeks ago in Prince, Utah and ended at Vidor High School with a lap around the track.”
