About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Pedal to Padre – Dr. Rose Gowen

Texbiker.net Posted on May 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumMay 22, 2008

The Brownsville Herald

Dr. Rose Gowen, Medical Correspondent, University of Texas

“A few years ago the River Rockets Bicycle Club began a once a year celebration of our landscape with a bicycle ride to South Padre. The first year a handful of riders “pedaled to Padre.” Each year since then the event has grown to attract bicycle riders from all over Texas, many other states, and several parts of Mexico. On May 4, I was thrilled to ride for the second time in the Pedal to Padre.

I arrived at the starting line to find kids, teens, young adults and even senior citizens on bicycles that were hand-me-downs, shiny and new, inexpensive, and very expensive. There were even differently-abled riders on adaptive bicycles. As I rode towards the island, the landscape I grew up around reached out to share life and community spirit with each and every rider. As a group we shared an active experience through a beautiful part of the world in our very own backyard.”

“Emily Bollinger, a sophomore at the University of Texas, and 49 of her newfound friends are taking part in the Texas 4000, a bicycle ride to Alaska. The goal is to raise money for cancer research and awareness of the disease.

The first ride originated with a UT student and a group of friends in 2004.

Since then, sponsors have signed on and applicants for the 50 spots have increased to about 200 annually, Bollinger said.”
