About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sweetwater’s Rattlesnake Gravel Grind Podcast

Drop Bar, Texas: A cycling podcast By Paul Negrete | anchor.fm

Sweetwater, Texas is known for wind turbines, rodeo, and now the Rattlesnake Gravel Grind. Organizer David King is on with Justin McQuerry and Mat Stephens (2nd & 3rd in 2022, respectively) to talk about the 2023 edition scheduled March 25. We also talk about where the event’s name comes from and answer the question whether we’ve ever done any bull-riding. It’s the beginning of a new season of Drop Bar Texas and I hope you keep seeing this great state from a bike saddle.

‘Bicycle Friendly’ Cities And Towns Across America Now Top 500

Tanya Mohn | www.forbes.com

A growing number of bicycle friendly communities across the United States have been cited for their efforts to make cycling safer, easier and more accessible, as a means of transportation and for recreation.

In December, the League of American Bicyclists announced its latest round of Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) awards. More than 30 cities and towns — some honored for the first time and others previously cited that moved up in the ranking — were commended for their work to improve cycling. An additional seven places earned an Honorable Mention.

To date, 501 communities, represented in all 50 states, have been designated in the Bicycle Friendly Community program: …

… Houston, Texas developed a method for implementing the city’s 1,800-mile bike plan that ensures that bikeways are built where the need is greatest, like in low-income and historically under-resourced neighborhoods, and areas where many residents don’t own cars. …

… Brownsville, Texas, a multilingual border town, offers all of its bike safety and informational materials in multiple translated languages.

New autonomous car company Cruise adapts to bicycle riders, city policy

Rylie Lillibridge and Kylee Howard | thedailytexan.com

As the autonomous rideshare service Cruise expands its services into Austin, company officials say they are committed to safety amid concerns around the city’s increase in bicycle transportation and accidents.

Cruise’s expansion of services comes at the tail end of the deadliest year of all time on Austin roads. In 2022, 51 pedestrians and cyclists were killed in crashes. An early January video captured a Cruise car veering into an empty bike lane. The Austin Transportation Department requested that Cruise present to the Bicycle Advisory Council on Feb. 21 regarding the video and evidence of other traffic violations by their vehicles.

“Safety is Cruise’s top priority, not just for our passengers but for everyone we share the road with,” a Cruise spokesperson said in an email. “Our technology is always improving and we’re reviewing our lane mapping in that area.”

As of 2021, Austin has completed 50% of the All Ages and Abilities Bicycle Priority Network plan, ATD representative Jeff Stensland said. According to the network’s website, the project aims to provide mobile travelers with “safe and comfortable” choices. Three drafts for updated bicycle lane projects in the AAA network were made available Friday.

Ameer Abu-Ziyadeh, an economics freshman who frequently rides his bike in the downtown area, said …

601 Feet Climbing. Tour de Zwift Stage 7 Makuri Islands Island Outskirts

Texbiker.net Posted on January 30, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 30, 2023

Stage 7 of the Tour de Zwift Group B rode the Makuri Islands Island Outskirts course for 2 laps plus a short lead-in. Back on December 22, 2022, I rode this course for an hour in a group ride. Portions of the course show up in other routes so I had some previous segment data to compete against. There are 4 segments in Strava and I got a medal on two of them. The event description said the distance would be 14.2 miles with 597 feet of climbing. I climbed 604 feet, not enough to gripe about.

Leaving the start area there was a .2 mile lead-in to the lap start. Two sprints awaited on each lap. For 1.2 miles the road went up and down with the serious climb reaching 194 feet at 2.16 miles followed by a nice descent to 3.3 miles. A short false flat of .2 of a mile interrupted the descent which resumed bottoming out at 4.2 miles. The next climb went from 9 feet to 49 feet topping out at 4.77 miles. A short downhill took me to the valley and back to the lap start in 2.33 miles. Then it was rinse and repeat to the end of the stage.

The “nearby” Zwifters for the stage showed 1023 or 1024. I got as low as 799 and as high as 844 during the stage. From ZwiftPower.com I was 516 out of 587. Group A showed 843, Group C 257, and Group D 33.

1-30-2023 ZwiftPower.com partial results Group B Tour de Zwift Stage 7

I rode each stage of the 2023 Tour de Zwift. I think this is the first time I rode all of the stages without needing a make up stage. I rode only Group B courses whereas in other Tour de Zwift’s I think I mixed Group B and Group C.

Strava results: PR on Island Outskirts (22:19), PR on Festival Harbor Climb CCW (5:51), 2nd fastest time on Island Outskirts (23:50), and 3rd fastest time on Festival Harbor Climb CCW (6:25).

Doing some route recon for a possible group ride soon. Took it easy, but it was a fun ride. Even got to visit with David Patterson in Boerne! No James “JJ” Johnson Jr – MTCCSA/MT1899 though! ? Said hello to Boerne Bigfoot. Made me think of WY seeing the live elk and then all that statuary later.

Meetup Ride Avoiding Rain. Makuri Islands Castle to Castle

Texbiker.net Posted on January 29, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 29, 2023

Makuri Islands was not on the free ride list so I created a meetup because I didn’t want to ride in the worlds available. I chose the Castle to Castle route because of the 456 feet of climbing and the 14.3 mile length which I changed to 15 miles. With the extra distance I ended up climbing 469 feet and riding 15.07 miles. Because Makuri Islands wasn’t open the number of other Zwifters was low at 1100 or so. I think the group in the video thumbnail was the only one I saw.

From ZwiftInsider.com – “Released in Zwift’s January 2022 update, Castle to Castle draws its name from the two castles you’ll pass along the way – first the castle area in Yumezi, then the imperial palace in the Neokyo’s Castle Park.” Three sprints and some moderate climbing make the route interesting.

From ZwiftInsider.com. Castle to Castle route map

While I rode Castle to Castle I also watched the replay of the GP La Marseillaise on GCN+. They rode much faster than me covering 50km while I rode 15 miles.

This is the third time riding Castle to Castle. This ride was the longest distance but no the fastest average speed.

Outside it has rained most of the day so I rode inside closing out the week with all Zwift rides, no outside biking. I don’t know if I have done that before. Maybe only riding Zwift in a week but not everyday. Also I’ve rode every day of January so far.
