About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Using pedal power to go to work in Austin

Texbiker.net Posted on May 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumMay 22, 2008

Gasoline prices can drive people to consider some transportation alternatives. KEYEtv.com reporter Bettie Cross offers this report.

“With gasoline prices increasing rapidly, this year’s edition of Bike to Work Day has special significance.

More people than normal may be taking two-wheels Friday, not only because of rising fuel costs but because it’s Bike to Work Day.

More than half of all Americans live less than five miles from where they work according to Bicycling Magazine. About 1 1/2% of Americans commute by bicycle, and in Japan 15% of the population commute by bicycle. In China, bicycles outnumber cars 250 to 1.”

The Galveston County Daily News reports on a bike boom in the county. (Link to the full article)

Robert Taylor is a bicycling evangelist. One of the first questions he asks new acquaintances is: Do you ride?

Taylor does — everywhere. He rides to work, to the grocery store, to restaurants. And he’s always encouraging others to do the same.

With gas prices pushing people’s pocketbook pain threshold, more drivers are willing to listen to Taylor’s pitch.

Bicycling as a primary form of transportation already is common in Galveston, where streets are flat and everything is within easy pedaling distance.
