About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Some Jungle Dust Today. The Watopia Jungle Circuit

Texbiker.net Posted on January 24, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 24, 2023

No connection dropout on today’s Zwift ride thanks to connecting to my desktop computer’s Bluetooth. I was late riding today from messing around on my computer. Outside it was starting to rain heavy as a new front moved in so not any decision on riding outside.

I chose the Watopia Jungle Circuit for the ride. The last time I rode it was January 23, 2022. With the name “Jungle” I switched to the mountain bike. The lead-in was on paved roads making me think I made the wrong bike choice but the dirt appeared finally. Then I wondered, maybe the gravel bike would’ve been better. No stopping to change bikes though. I rode at a good pace setting a personal record on the second lap on the Jungle Loop thanks to my pace partner and some hard pedaling. I rode the lead-in and then 2 laps on the Jungle Loop for a total of 13.61 miles and 607 feet of climbing. The climbing was up one hill twice with some fast downhills afterward. I rode two laps to get more than 10 miles to make it an “official” ride.

The matched rides from Strava is different from the ones I have in SportTracks.

Opinion: 11th St. rebuild is destroying the fabric of our neighborhood

Letters to the Editor | www.houstonchronicle.com

Mayor Sylvester Turner talks to Bob Stein as he speaks with Heights area residents while taking a closer look at 11th Street, after plans to change traffic patterns on the street, including adding a bicycle lane, that drew some alarm from residents Wednesday, May 25, 2022 in Houston. Heights rebuild

Regarding "Editorial: Why would Houston want to rebuild roads to slow cars down?" (Jan. 18): In the editorial, you write, "The frustration of NextDoor commenters about the 11th Street rebuild is understandable.” The frustration isn’t about having to wait an extra light or two, as the mayor pointed out in approving this project. The frustration is about the safety issues this rebuild causes for the residents of the Heights. From the beginning, residents were concerned about the amount of cut-through traffic this will create. Drivers frustrated about waiting on 11th Street will divert to residential streets where families ride bikes, people walk dogs and children play.

Another big safety concern is the …

The HHH start has become a lot more efficient and safer since the first one in 1982, when cyclists (riding different distances) crowded together at the stadium, and then took off on their merry way (once the cannon boomed.)

Left At The Start Again. Stage 5 Tour de Zwift New York Knickerbocker Reverse

Texbiker.net Posted on January 23, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 23, 2023

Stage 5 of the Tour de Zwift opened today. I signed up for the Group B ride starting at 12:02 PM. The route was the New York Knickerbocker Reverse. I rode part of the New York Knickerbocker route once before back on February 6, 2022, biking 6.2 miles. Today I rode 1 lap, 14.32 miles climbing 1204 feet. The official description said 14.1 miles and 1197 feet of climbing. I rode a couple of 10th’s of a mile after crossing the finish line.

Another loss of connection a minute or two after the start. I used the companion app to connect to my Wahoo Kickr Core trainer and heart rate monitor. The connection looked good. I even restarted my phone before the ride to see if that would help. It didn’t. I went to the pairing page and switched to my desktop computer. It took 30 to 40 seconds to get connected and then back to the event. Of course, everyone was long gone except for a few stragglers like me. The “nearby Zwifters” showed 1354 and I was around 1325. As I picked up speed I passed a few and moved below 1300 and settled into the 1280’s. By the finish I improved to about 1270. Next Zwift ride I will use the desktop computer connection skipping the companion app. I have no idea why the app connects and while I pedal waiting for the ride to start works and then looses the connection.

The route was either up or down with flat sections very short if they existed at all. The description at ZwiftInsider.com showed the average gradient was 5.7% but I rode 15% in several places and I was out of the saddle numerous times as you can see in the video. I’m surprised I averaged 14.5 mph overall with the steep climbs and my very slow ascent. Climbing the KOM seemedto take a very long time even though it was only 7:28. I managed to set my second fastest Strava time on that KOM. Strava medals: PR on Three Sisters – Fulgaz (5:51), 2nd fastest time on NYC KOM Reverse (7:28), and 2nd fastest time on Harlem Hill Climb (3:23).

Results from ZwiftPower.com for Group B put me at 746 out of 762. Group A showed 973, Group C 619, and Group D 44. Zwifters showed 28,588 when I opened the companion app to sign in and 26, 259 when I finished the ride.
