About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Sun and Ski Sports to be the Official Bike Shop for Tour du Rouge!

Texbiker.net Posted on January 22, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 22, 2008

Not only will they be offering discounts and fund raising support for the riders, they will be coming along for the entire six days of the Tour to provide mechanical support.  For those already signed up, Sun and Ski will be hosting all of the rider meetings. This will allow the tour to offer a variety of meeting locations since they have 5 stores in the Houston area.

Coming up, the tour will be joining Sun and Ski Sports at their "Bike University" Open House with free cycling courses, clinics and hands-on demonstrations Jan. 25, from 5-10 p.m., and Jan. 26, from noon-7 p.m., at Sun & Ski Sports, 6100 Westheimer, between Fountainview and Hillcroft.

6th annual TBi race sees jump in participation

Texbiker.net Posted on January 20, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 20, 2008

from The Killeen Daily Herald (full article link)

By Jon Schroeder
Killeen Daily Herald

COPPERAS COVE – With a record number of riders, the 2008 TBi Copperas Cove Classic Road Race was bigger than ever. Better, some would say.

For Andy Hollinger, who started the race, it’s another good year. Copperas Cove, he says, is "Texas’ most bicycle-friendly city," and Hollinger’s race is one of the most popular in Texas, if only because it kicks off the season.

Saturday’s competition was the first road race in Texas since last season came to a close in October. That makes it a bigger deal than most, organizers said, although Cove also hosts the state championship race on an overlapping course.

Single Speed Mountain Bikes

Texbiker.net Posted on January 19, 2008 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 19, 2008

The Dallas Morning News has an article delving into riding a single speed mountain bike. Writer Joe Simnacher  reports a number of riders are going back to the basics. Now I don’t know about you but single speed might be a little too basic.

An excerpt from the article:

More and more mountain-bike enthusiasts are shifting back to the basics and choosing single-speed machines.

While advancements in mountain-bike technology have seemed to bring more climbing capability with each model year, some aficionados say there can be too much of a good thing.

Fans of the new generation of one-speed mountain bikes rave about their dependability, quiet ride and sense of cycling purity.

"There was a moment in the mountain bike world when it had, like, a rebirth," says Gary Fisher, who gave the mountain bike its name nearly 30 years ago. "It’s purist. It’s practical. The bikes are light because they don’t have all that other stuff on there."
