Bikes get special touch just for SMU

It won’t be long before SMU students, faculty, alumni and friends of the university can purchase another type of SMU-branded merchandise.

The Collegiate Bicycle Company, a new company based in San Diego, Calif., plans to make SMU-branded bicycles available to the SMU community.

"Our goal is to provide a quality, affordable means of transportation specifically tailored to each college or university community that we are privileged to be working with," Director of Operations for Collegiate Bicycle Company Erik Camp said. "At the heart, it’s meant to be a fun product that current, former and prospective university members can be proud of."

For the initial rollout, the company will be offering "beach cruiser" style bikes to the SMU community.

Fort Worth Bicycling Club Hosts the Easter Hill Country Tour

The Fort Worth Bicycling Association will serve as host for the 35th annual Easter Hill Country Tour in Central Texas. The tour offers three rides over the weekend of March 21-23 in Fredericksburg and Kerrville.

“The Easter Hill ride has a good reputation; it brings in riders from all over the country,” said Gary Gottlieb, the Fort Worth Bicycling Association rides coordinator. “Saturday’s ride [March 22] crosses the Guadalupe River 18 times. It’s a real pretty route and mostly on low-traffic roads. This event is more of an enjoy-the-scenery event.”

The weekend draws roughly 1,000 cyclists and includes a 100-mile ride March 22. More than 50 members of the Fort Worth association will help run the event, teaming with local volunteers to man the break stations and the meals. The tour rotates hosts between clubs in Fort Worth, Houston, Lubbock and San Antonio.

Gottlieb encouraged interested riders to pre-register at the event’s Web site, www.ehct.com.

 

Waco Wild West Century – Waco, TX

The Waco Wild West Century Ride starts at 8 a.m. in front at the Suspension Bridge in downtown Waco. Registration and packet pickup will be held Friday,September 28 from 3 – 9 p.m. at the Waco Convention Center, and at Indian Spring Park beginning at 6:30 a.m.

A 10-mile family friendly route goes through beautiful Cameron Park and downtown Waco. There are several rest stops to make it a fun ride for all. The 25-mile route is also fun for families and recreational riders. This route is quite flat and passes by the Lake Waco Dam and the peaceful surrounding countryside. The 50 & 65-mile routes are relatively flat with a few challenging hills thrown in to keep you from getting bored! The 100-mile Presidential Tour takes riders on scenic roads throughout McLennan County. It passes by the Western White House, and through the oldest state park in Texas, Mother Neff Park. Although fairly flat, there are some hills to get your heart pumping! Again this year, the 50, 65 and 100-mile routes feature a rest stop at the Masterfoods USA candy factory, home of Skittles®.

Sunshine is Conducive to Riding

Week two of 2008 has been kind  for riding. Although I was only able to ride three days the miles for the week were 79. With the year to date total at 166 I am ahead of 2007’s 97 with two weeks to go in January.

The temperature was below my normal 60 degree threshold today but I am intent on getting more miles in January to lay the foundation for the year. The sunshine offset the cool breeze. Construction continues to crimp the roads on my normal route north along US59. In the coming weeks the service road will be rebuilt and this may cause me to find some alternative route around the construction. There already is a section closed further north but there is a parallel side road that gets me around most of it.

The plans are still on to attend the Jalapeno 100 in Harlingen on February 16th. Warm south Texas is calling.
