About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Heights 11th Street project getting mixed reviews among neighbors and drivers

Author: Janelle Bludau | www.khou.com

Drivers say it’s creating a traffic nightmare, but some neighbors say they’ve grown to love it.

HOUSTON, Texas — The Height’s 11th Street project is underway, but not everyone is happy about it.

Drivers say it’s creating a traffic nightmare as construction crews make the four-lane road into two lanes while businesses say it’s keeping customers away.

“They’ve just shifted the problem elsewhere," Heights resident Don Farrell said.

It’s a proposal that already had a fair share of controversy before it was approved last year.

“Give us a little time, anything during construction is not the final view of it, how things will work. Things get a lot better when that is complete," Houston Planning and Development Chief Transportation Planner David Fields said.

When it’s complete, …

The you “can’t get there from here ride, so you have to leave here to get there”. We were following a route, that may not have ever been ridden before, when we came to a closed gate. So we backtracked only to then go back to the gate and climbed over. We then continued only to discover we couldn’t continue as the road ended. So after backtracking again, we finally found an alternative route. We had a great time and it was a beautiful day for a gravel ride.

Rode Zwift Watopia Tick Tock, Watched Benidorm Cyclocross

Texbiker.net Posted on January 22, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 22, 2023

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I biked outside and the last four days I rode inside on Zwift. Today I closed the week out doing a free ride on the Watopia Tick Tock route. This route totals 12.0 miles including a 1.5 mile lead-in. A little climbing at 194 feet. I thought there was 21 feet more of climbing in the lead-in but that was included in the overall total from the route description in Zwift. The last time I rode this route was February 15, 2021, during the big cold weather storm. This was the fourth time riding Tick Tock with none of the rides the same distance. While I rode today I watched the women’s UCI World Cup Benidorm cyclocross race from Spain.

The route is pretty flat with only a small climb around 7km in. I rode up the climb seated without changing gears. The only sprint was Fuego Flats. I probably could’ve rode faster but the last ride of the week I treated as recovery. I’ve rode every day in January.

Amarillo Parks and Recreation partners with Six Pack Outdoors to provide bike trails

by: Jack Kessler | www.myhighplains.com

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – For those looking to enjoy the outdoors and do some cycling, the City of Amarillo’s Park and Recreation Department and the non-profit Six Pack Outdoors have you covered.

A few years ago, the two formed a partnership to provide public biking trails. The first location that was built was the 9th Street Trails near the medical district and more locations have since been added, including one at Rick Klein and one at John Stiff Memorial Park.

“The trails that have been built are really beginner trails and intermediate trails, so it allows people to go out there are try trails and get comfortable with them before they go out and adventure with a more advance trail,” said Michael Kashuba, director of the Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department.

Kashuba added this is …

Two Times Up The Temple KOM Was Enough

Texbiker.net Posted on January 21, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 21, 2023

Chilly outside so I’m inside on a free ride using the Kappa Quest route in the Makuri islands. I rode the Kappa Quest Reverse twice before. I planned on riding at least 2 laps but stopped as I approached the third climb up the Temple KOM. Route Basics from ZwiftInsider.com Length: 9 km (5.6 miles) Elevation: 139 m (456‘) Lead-In: 3.3 km (2.1 miles). I rode 12.00 miles and climbed 971 feet. A short ride but plenty of effort going up the climbs.

On the first time up Temple KOM my ghost rider helped pace me to a new personal record. The second time I couldn’t keep up with him. The climbs were on dirt/gravel and I should’ve stopped to change to a gravel bike but I didn’t. I rode a road bike. I got out of the saddle several times going up the KOM thanks to the stability of my Wahoo Kickr Core trainer. The graph below shows the weekly effort from Strava.

To pace me up the climbs I listened to America’s Top 40 on SiriusXM Seventies from January 20, 1979 with Casse Kasem.

Five medals from Strava.
