About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Lodge gives away 41 bicycles

Texbiker.net Posted on December 18, 2007 by Rick AnkrumDecember 18, 2007

By Monica Green, Cleburne Times Review (link to full article)

Cleburne Elks Lodge No. 811 is starting a new tradition. The lodge gave away 41 bicycles Friday to children in need for Christmas.

The idea was spurred by Arvol Hodge, who saw a similar project in Wichita Falls.

“He was the one who went to the elementary schools and told them what we were doing,” said Jimmy Ned Wallace, the lodge’s Exalted Ruler.

School personnel selected the students who received bicycles based on need.

The Travis County Sheriff is putting the spotlight on the RoadShare campaign.

A billboard is set to be officially unveiled later on Tuesday. It’s located at 24th and Rio Grande near the UT campus.

The billboard is the first of a series of billboards that will be put up around Travis County during 2008.

Wounded Warriors Bike Rural Texas Roads

Texbiker.net Posted on December 9, 2007 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2007

I must admit I have not heard of the wounded warrior organization. Thanks to the Schulenberg Cycling Club, a number of wounded veterans were able to ride the rural roads around Wallis.

According to the Houston Chronicle article written by Eyder Peralta, "Life moves slowly in this rural town west of Houston. The bicyclists click-clacked into the Knights of Columbus Hall on a gray, misty morning this past weekend, they recited the Pledge of Allegiance in a steady and patient manner, and they sat quietly as introductions were made with somber deliberation.

This was the first time the Schlumberger Cycling Club would ride for charity. The donations would go to Wounded Warriors, an organization that buys wheelchairs and bicycles for disabled war vets."

You can learn more about Wounded Warriors at their website www.woundedwarriors.org

There is a video at the Houston Chronicle link.

Rice University Cycling Team Restarts After 10 Year Absence

Texbiker.net Posted on December 8, 2007 by Rick AnkrumDecember 8, 2007

from the Rice Thresher (full article link)

By Jocelyn Wright | Thresher Editorial Staff

It often seems like most biking on campus is either in a rush to get to class or is preceded by Beer. But Rice’s long-dormant Cycling Team is starting to put campus peddlers back into competition.

The year-round club, started by Baker College senior J.C. Zapata and Brown College sophomore Jasper Yan this semester, meets several times a week to bike around Houston.

Yan said the team was an effort to revive Rice’s cycling team, which was extremely active about ten years ago and had road races with the University of Texas, Texas A&M and the University of Houston. Although the team has existed since then, it became less active over the years until Yan and Zapata decided to revive it this year.
