The Texas Department of Transportation is proposing that FM 78 be widened from Gembler Road east to Cunningham Street to the west.
The proposed widening would add a center lane with acceleration lanes and 5-foot bicycle lanes on either side of the road.
Shiner Beers is going back to its roots in anticipation of the Spoetzl Brewery’s 100th Anniversary. Shiner BASH was formerly Shiner GASP, which was the Great Austin to Shiner Pedal, and the beginning of Shiner’s biking history. This year we will be returning to Shiner’s past and once again have Shiner GASP, one Great bike ride from Austin to Shiner.
Cyclists will depart from Austin and ride 90 miles through small towns and scenic byways on the way to the historic Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas.
Cyclists will begin their trek at 7 a.m. from Austin.Website

Pam writes about the group of riders who meet Saturday mornings. These are not your sightseeing riders:
“The group, which pedals at an average rate of about 27 mph and hits speeds close to 50 mph on the downhills, includes professional cyclists, Category 1 and Category 2 rated riders. (The lower the number, the more proficient the rider.)”
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports on the tug of war between the Chamber of Commerce and a group of ride volunteers. Each group claims they are responsible for the success of the ride and want to run the event this year. The Chamber owns the name but the volunteers say they provide the brainpower to put the race on.
