About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Jacket With 3 Rear Pockets. Grabbed A Local Legend

Texbiker.net Posted on January 4, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 4, 2023

Today I rode to the north for the first time this year. Not a real big claim since it is only January the 4th. I tried to ride to the north last week but got caught in the rain and turned back. No rain today just lots of sun but a little cooler than I prefer. I decided to wear one of the new jackets I bought last month from Voler. The jackets (I bought 2) have real rear pockets to hold my phone and key rather than no pocket or one big pocket. Several years ago I bought a jacket like that but it has been hard to find them.

The 70 degrees at the 12:10 PM start was much better than the 44 degrees my home weather station showed when I got up. The forecast was promising and I watched as it climbed into the 60’s. I rode my Lynskey Helix bike on my Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood route. I tried to be attentive on following the route so that Strava would find other rides to match against. Strava found a total of three including today. I suspect the reason for not matching more is the times I avoided riding on Rock Creek Drive to Northpark Drive which I rode today. The dogs at that intersection seem to be gone so I ride there now.

Year progressions YTD mileage after today’s bike ride now puts 2023 clearly ahead of 2011 through 2022. How long will that last? I’m planning on biking either outside or inside each day but sometimes interruptions happen.

My legs felt good today and the 8 mph wind wasn’t too strong. A couple of places where the route headed west it was hard pedaling but I built up my overall average speed to 14.0 mph and held it there for a number of miles.

I captured the Strava Local Legend on Briar Willow to Lodge in Briar Tree with my 9th ride in the last 90 days.

Weather during the bike ride: start 70 (humidity 37%, dew point 43), a few clouds, wind W 8 mph; finish 72 (humidity 31%, dew point 39), partly cloudy, wind 8 mph.

Upside Down Chain. Chasing 2017 Miles. I Don’t Run In Mud

Texbiker.net Posted on January 3, 2023 by Rick AnkrumJanuary 3, 2023

When I got up this morning I wasn’t sure the weather would cooperate for an outside bike ride but by 10 AM the streets dried off and rain moved on. I watched the women’s and men’s cyclocross race from Belgium, X2O Badkamers Herentals, on GCN+. Lots of mud but no sand or barriers to contend with. Glad I don’t run through mud when I’m biking.

I managed to get started before 11 AM riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I headed south and east on my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. The NW wind mostly helped me on the way to FM 2100 except crossing Lake Houston where it was from my left and felt strong. The ride back to the west wasn’t as windy for some reason. Maybe because the side barrier blocked some of the wind.

At the start of the ride I heard the rear cassette grinding in the #4 cog. I tried shifting to a couple of higher gears but it didn’t make much difference. It quieted some when I shifted to the #7 gear, #8, and #9. I thought I had found the problem a few days ago but that didn’t last. When I stopped at Kingwood Greens Drive and West Lake Houston Parkway I had an idea to check the chain. When I looked it was installed upside down. The SRAM Rival chain has a flat side that is supposed to be on the outside of the loop and I had put it on the inside after getting the new crankset installed. When I got home I fixed the chain and now it runs and shifts quietly. A small erro makes a noisy difference.

Only 3 days into the new year I looked at the year progressions for YTD miles and was surprised to see 2017 has more miles than 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 so far. 8 miles more than 2023.

The weekly effort is helpful to see how I’m doing. Matched rides is interesting to see how I do. This is from my new Strava subscription.
