About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

The new Roxo Racing squad, based in Fort Worth, Texas, moves from US domestic elite status to Continental level with 10 North American riders, including Grand Prix champion Haley Smith joining Newsom for a focus on gravel racing. It was an …

6th Time Riding Zwift Watopia’s Waistband Route

Texbiker.net Posted on December 19, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 19, 2022

Today was problem solving day and trips to mail boxes. After I finished those I got ready to ride Zwift because the weather outside was bad, not the weather shown on the Strava ride summary below. Outside it was 45 degrees and raining with a strong 10 mph wind. Inside it was toasty once I got warmed up. After opening Zwift on my computer I looked for a route about 15 miles with not too much climbing. The Watopia’s Waistband fit those criteria with what the description said was 15.8 miles and 312 feet of climbing. I got dressed and everything ready. When I clicked on the start ride the distance came up as 17.2 miles which including the lead-in that the 15.8 miles didn’t. Not a problem as long as the climbing didn’t change too much.

While Zwifting I listened to Pandora’s Contemporary Christian Radio songs.

I started pedaling at 3:14 PM and after riding 57:28 I covered 17.51 virtual miles and climbed 335 feet. This was the 6th ride on this route with last one before today on January 10th, 2022. I was thinking today I would try to set some Strava top results but at the end of the ride I didn’t accomplish that. Below is a summary of all the rides on this route. Some of the previous rides were events like the Tour de Zwift and the Tour of Watopia.

The Zwifters online today were much lower than yesterday. When I started I think it was about 8,000 and when I finished it was around 7,000.

WiFi Problems Held Me Back, Zwift Makuri Island Fine and Sandy

Texbiker.net Posted on December 18, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 18, 2022

After getting home from church I decided to wrap up this week’s biking on Zwift. Using the companion app I found a group ride for a change that was a good distance (19.9 miles) and allowed me enough time to get everything ready. The route was a new for me, the Fine and Sandy in the Makuri Islands world. 3 laps plus a short lead-in looked good. It went downhill as I waited for the ride to start. My phone (a Pixel 7 Pro) would not stay connected to my WiFi causing the sensors to not register in the desktop program. I tried to get it connected but it would start then fail. When it disconnected I stopped moving in Zwift. The group ride didn’t stop though. I switched to using my computer’s Bluetooth connection and that worked. But by then I was 14 minutes behind everyone else. I didn’t quit though. Riding by myself I made the 3 laps and set some Strava results coming in last for the group. I got the route badge too.

I rode 19.93 miles and climbed 768 feet, 5 feet more than the event said. Outside it was 54 degrees, cloudy and the wind was from the east at 9 mph. Below my weather threshold.

The Sandy and Fine route. From ZwiftInsider.com, “Sort of the little brother to Island Outskirts, Fine and Sandy is a shorter circuit of the Urukazi island complex.” There was a .1 mile lead-in and each lap was 6.6 miles. The climbing mostly came on two small hills on each lap. I probably should’ve switched to a gravel bike because a lot of the roads were not paved but I stuck with the S-Works and Dura Ace wheels.

This week I rode everyday but Friday when I worked on my Jeep installing side steps. I thought I had enough time after installing them but I ran into bad traffic on the trip to the hardware store for some bolts to finish up. 5 days riding Zwift and 1 riding outside totaled 127.75 miles. My year to date mileage is 9,219.
