About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Had a great ride with a small group of guys, and just before we got to Medina, Timothy Murphy and I were descending a very steep section of highway with several sharp corners. According to Tim, he “overcooked one,“ but with his disc brakes was able to slow down in time and stay upright. I wasn’t able to, and rather than hit Tim, I basically hit the deck. My right shifter by the brake lever became dysfunctional, but I was still able to shift the bike manually by pushing the buttons on the derailleurs themselves. I’m very thankful to Michael Matt for hanging back with me, and helping me decide which gear to put my bike in as I had to ride it as a single speed for the rest of the ride. As always, though, I am most thankful to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for keeping me safe, and allowing me to return to this sport which I love, and for another safe ride.?

Muscle Soreness Recedes, Church For Sale

Texbiker.net Posted on December 10, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 10, 2022

Because I started today’s bike ride at 10:27 AM I didn’t expect to see other cyclists as I rode the Atascocita – Huffman – Walden route. But I did see 3 casual cyclists around the 1.2 mile point on the greenbelt where it goes under Northpark Drive. The video clips are short today because I didn’t think to shoot more. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike 32.34 miles finishing at 1:00 PM. Another reason for the late Saturday start: men and women’s Exact cyclocross races from northern Belgium on GCN+.

I am 76% of the way to my December 200 road mile goal.

My legs and neck muscles are getting back in shape. Those muscles have been sore from the rides this week but felt better today. Almost 2 weeks of not riding took a toll.

As I rode by the church on Fairlake Lane I saw a for sale sign. The parking lot is a favorite gathering spot for cyclists who drive there to start their ride. I don’t know the market for church properties but it will be missed if cyclists cannot park there.

The warm December weather stayed around though it was a couple degrees cooler than yesterday but I started later then. I wore shorts, long sleeve poly T-shirt, and a short sleeve jersey on top. Weather for the bike ride: start 74 (humidity 85%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind SE 4 mph; finish 78 (humidity 77%, dew point 70), mostly cloudy, wind SE 7 mph.

Video: Austin aims to expand MetroBike program to underserved communities using state funding

www.kvue.com

The city transportation department said MetroBike has seen "significant growth" in ridership since introducing e-assist bikes in 2020.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin residents could soon see more bicycles in the area as the city council looks to expand the MetroBike system.

At the Austin City Council’s regular meeting on Thursday, council members approved a measure to apply for a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to expand MetroBike. That’s the city’s docked, bike-share system maintained and operated by Capital Metro.

Austin is one of the few cities that …

San Jacinto Bayou Greenway Discovery; Police and Deputies

Texbiker.net Posted on December 9, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 9, 2022

I chose the Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Valley Ranch route for today’s bike ride. I didn’t know I would find new (to me at least) sections of the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway when I got to the Forest Cove Community Center on Marina Drive. The bike ride began at 11:03 AM as I rolled out on my Lynskey Helix bike. The last time I rode this route was April 22nd, 2022. I rode many of the streets as part of other routes but not this specific route since then. Today was the 5th time biking the route in 2022. I biked 26.92 miles today, a little less than the other times. December road miles now totals 120.58, 60% of my 200 mile goal. I finished the ride at 1:15 PM.

12-9-2022 YTD Bike Rides Forest Cove-Oakhurst-Valley Ranch Route

A couple of months ago I read that the City of Houston resumed work on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway. Today I found out where that work was. As I rode past the Forest Cove Community Center on Marina Drive I saw trucks and workers ahead. The video shows some of the new greenway sections. At first I wasn’t sure about riding on the new greenway but the workers didn’t stop as I rode. Some sections were covered with dirt and a couple of workers shoveled it away. The new sections incorporate some of the original concrete streets with added concrete. I think the City of Houston portion is in place and now it is up to Harris County to build the remainder through Edgewater Park to US59. At the end of the greenway where the picnic tables are (also there was a very old sign warning car owners they would be towed if they didn’t pay $3) I rode to Hamblen Road through a partially open gate just west of the BBQ restaurant and across from the closed flea market. There is a white fence on both sides of the gate if you come from Hamblen Road to the greenway.

I passed through two law enforcement spots. The first one was in Bear Branch with a bunch of Houston Police cars parked in front of a house. Two people were talking with a police officer. Not sure what happened but as I began the bike ride I heard sirens not too far away. The second was at E. Knox Street just east of the railroad crossing. Three Montgomery County Sheriff deputies cars were on Adams St and they were outside of their cars in a meeting. Again not sure what that was about.

Weather for the bike ride: start 79 (humidity 77%, dew point 71), mostly cloudy, wind calm; finish 80 (humidity 68%, dew point 68), partly cloudy, wind SW 6 mph. Wind wasn’t much of a problem but the humidity made for a muggy ride. I didn’t overdress. I wore shorts, short sleeve jersey, arm sleeves, and gloves.

Strava top results: PR on Don’t Get Run Over on Hamblen West (42s), Local Legend on Woodridge Forest Straightaway, Local Legend on John Quincy Adams.
