About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Legs Turn The Pedals, My Head Just Sits There

Texbiker.net Posted on December 8, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 8, 2022

I continued to take advantage of the warm December weather on today’s bike ride. It began at 11:13 AM as I rolled out on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. The route went south and east and this time I rode over Lake Houston on the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route. I’m continuing to have sore neck muscles holding my head in position. Surprising how much a helmet weights at the end of the bike ride at 1:57 PM. My legs are doing much better than my neck and they turn the pedals while my head just sits there for the ride.

Nothing out of the ordinary during the ride but it was nice to see many homes decorated for Christmas. I need to get the manger scene setup this evening outside. My late starts this week probably puts other cyclists finishing before I get to see them. I’m at 47% of my 200 road miles goal for December.

Weather for the bike ride: start 81 (humidity 67%, dew point 69), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; finish 82 (humidity 60%, dew point 67), partly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. The light wind was appreciated. Lake Houston looked like a sheet of glass. The warm weather will probably be here until Tuesday afternoon.

On the way back to Kingwood I rode on the unopened concrete section of FM 1960 approaching Atascocita Shores Drive. The short section of dirt and debris between the end of the concrete and Atascocita Shores was challenging with depressions and chunks of stuff but I made it up. Its a good thing I shifted to the 35×15 gears before tackling that. Does that count towards gravel riding?

By TRACE HARRIS | www.galvnews.com

GALVESTON

The trial for the man accused in the death of popular island physician Dr. Nancy Hughes, who was killed in a March hit-and-run crash while riding her bicycle on the seawall’s east end, has been postponed to February.

A pre-trial hearing in the case is set for Jan. 27.

“There are a number of reasons that trials are delayed,” Assistant District Attorney Kevin Petroff said. “Each month, we set a number of trials at a time and they are …

Batteries Don’t Like Extended Vacation

Texbiker.net Posted on December 7, 2022 by Rick AnkrumDecember 7, 2022

The extended time not riding my Lynskey Helix bike created two problems on today’s bike ride. The last time I rode the Lynskey was November 10th. Around the 1 mile point today I noticed the rear derailleur didn’t shift when I pushed the lever. I looked at the gear page on my Wahoo Bolt computer and saw a big N/A where the gear should be. I switched the front derailleur battery to the rear and the gears showed up on the computer page. I rarely shift the front chainring so no problem but I wondered if the battery would last the whole ride. It did. Next when I stopped at the cemetery to visit my wife’s grave I saw the rear light no longer was flashing. I didn’t have a fix for this one. When I got home the chargers were busy. I think I’ll charge the rear derailleur battery on the Cervelo bike before tomorrow’s ride.

I rolled out on the ride at 10:57 AM, much earlier than yesterday’s ride. I chose a northerly route, Kingwood – FM 1485 – Kingwood, which would be a longer distance. The weather was mostly a repeat of yesterday but the wind wasn’t as strong on the return to Kingwood. By the 1:48 PM finish I rode 34.02 miles getting me to 30% of my 200 mile goal for December.

My neck muscles still need to get stronger. Several times my head drooped some from the weight of my helmet. Good thing I don’t mount my GoPro camera on my helmet. I remember this is a problem for the RAAM riders.

Weather for the ride: start 76 (humidity 86%, dew point 72), overcast, wind S 4 mph; finish 81 (humidity 67%, dew point 69), mostly cloudy, wind S 6 mph. I probably over dressed with a long sleeve jersey under a short sleeve one. But I was not too hot except for the few times the sun broke through the clouds. Thursday’s weather likely will repeat today.
