About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

An Ordinary Bike Ride To Tavola

Texbiker.net Posted on July 5, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJuly 5, 2024

After an absence of a couple of weeks I rode the New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch route on my Lynskey Helix bike. The Lynskey Helix may have felt left out so I rode it today after taking the day off for the 4th of July. This was the 6th ride on the route in 2024. Today’s 38.05 miles is about the average of all those rides getting to 144.7 miles for the month with 785 miles to go for my 930 mile goal. Not riding yesterday put me right on the pace to reach the goal but I prefer a cushion for unexpected things like the weather. I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. I stopped to take these photos.

Starting at 9:30 AM allowed me to finish by 12:51 PM avoiding the upper 90’s in the afternoon. Wind was light, less than 5 mph from the WSW. Humidity decreased from 72% to 59% helping me stay cooler.

Harlingen taps Arroyo Park, rec center for grants

By Fernando Del Valle | myrgv.com

HARLINGEN — One of the busiest sites along the Arroyo Colorado’s Hike and Bike Trail might be in for a $1 million overhaul while officials push for a study into plans to build Harlingen’s first indoor recreational center.

At City Hall, officials are applying to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for a grant to fund a proposed $945,759 project aimed at upgrading Arroyo Park while requesting the agency also help fund a feasibility study into development of a recreational center at Pendleton Park.

As they review their priority list, officials are also mulling other funding sources to help …

Trek to begin direct-to-consumer sales through Consumer Choice program

by Dean Yobbi | www.bicycleretailer.com

WATERLOO, Wis. (BRAIN) — Trek Bicycle will join other brands in offering a direct-to-consumer buying option after unveiling its Consumer Choice program that will provide 15% to 20% margins to the consumer’s closest Partner Level retailer.

CEO John Burke held a video call with retailers to announce the program on Tuesday. BRAIN obtained a portion of the recording. Trek did not respond to BRAIN for comment Wednesday.

“There’s a certain segment of the population who buys online,” Burke told retailers. “They do not go to stores. They buy online. And, you know, we see it whether it’s with Canyon, whether it’s with Specialized, whether it’s with just about any other brand — Santa Cruz — the list goes on and on. You can buy those brands online. You can’t buy Trek online and have it delivered directly to you. So we’re going to change that.” …

Cycling Before the Heat: A 36-Mile Journey on the Cervelo Caledonia

Texbiker.net Posted on July 3, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJuly 3, 2024

Rolled out at 9:25 AM on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. As I got ready I went over possible routes and settled on the Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst one. I wanted to ride 36+ miles so I changed the streets some from the previous ride on May 15th. I only rode a short distance into The Highlands on Cumberland Blvd. and made the u-turn back to FM1314. The temperature was not quite 90 and I wanted to finish before the heat got serious. The wind stayed in the single digits and the humidity wasn’t too high. Today’s 36.27 miles is the highest since I first rode the route in July 2022. I’m building a cushion of miles towards my July goal of 930 miles with 106.6 versus 3 days of the average of 30 miles per day. I may need those since I’m not sure if I will ride on July 4th. I finished at 12:17 PM.

Hi Line Connector opens on The Loop Dallas’ 50-mile trail circuit. What comes next?

By Sharon Grigsby | www.dallasnews.com

With the link to the Katy Trail in place, planners turn to filling a seven-mile gap to connect White Rock Lake with Great Trinity Forest.

It’s never too hot to check out a fabulous new hike-and-bike trail, especially one where you might get the chance to see local artists at work on two huge murals celebrating all things Dallas.

The Loop Dallas’ Hi Line Connector links the Katy and Trinity Strand trails via a path adjacent to the American Airlines Center and through the Design District. Its water fountains aren’t installed, but you’ll find pockets of shade along the wide medians through which the path meanders.

Most importantly, the one-mile Hi Line allows you — whether on foot, bicycle, skateboard or scooter — to cross under …
