About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Missed 7 Days Of Riding

Texbiker.net Posted on November 8, 2022 by Rick AnkrumNovember 8, 2022

It has been a week since I was on my bike. I was sick and today was the first day I felt well enough to get out and enjoy early summer weather during the fall. In addition to not feeling well my niece has been in the ICU at the same time. Not a good week. And Daylight Saving Time rolled back too. The trifecta of bad stuff.

I got the bike ride underway at 11:40 AM riding my Cervelo Caledonia bike. I chose my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route for the 32nd time this year. I didn’t expect to ride fast and treated this as a recovery ride finishing at 2:32 PM after riding 34.09 miles. I thought not biking for a week that 2022 YTD miles would fall behind 2021 and 2020 but that didn’t happen.

Strava Year Progressions YTD Miles

The warm weather has a few more days until a cold front arrives on Friday sometime. My goal for November is 360 miles and I am way behind. There will be some Zwift rides if it is cold as the weather forecast predicts. Today’s weather: start 84 (humidity 56%, dew point 67), a few clouds, wind E 12 mph; finish 85 (humidity 54%, dew point 66), a few clouds, wind SE 17 mph. The headwind was strong getting to Huffman but helped me on the return to Kingwood.

I used the 35×13 gears for most of the ride even into the headwind.

Louisiana man bikes 800 miles across Texas

by: Abigail Jones | www.kxan.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Daniel Barousse is a full-time artist and furniture-maker living in Lafayette, Louisiana, so why did he spend nearly two weeks bicycling 800 miles across Texas? For him, it’s simple: to try to instill the same joy and passion that he feels in others.

His journey started with shoes when he was 11 years old. Barousse was at a new middle school, trying to find ways to fit in. The school required uniforms, so the only way to distinguish oneself was through shoes, and he noticed that the “cool kids” all wore Doc Martens. So he asked his parents for a pair for Christmas, but they said no.

Fast-forward about two months, Barousse bought his first skateboard with the …

Thanks to Biden, Houston gets bike lanes too – no one thanks him

by Ruetir | www.ruetir.com

Whether you ask at Emanuel bakery-restaurant, in the Huetamo hair salon, used car dealer Jorge Cantu or in the N&V launderette. Virtually every entrepreneur on Telephone Road, in Houston, reacts enthusiastically when he hears that his street will be completely renovated next year. Water drainage is being improved, the sidewalks are being refurbished and the many holes in the road surface are being closed. There will even be bike paths – unusual in the car-dominated Texas metropolis.

But if you already know that the renovation is imminent; no one knows who to thank for it: President Joe Biden and his Democrats. On Tuesday, they will try to maintain their wafer-thin majorities in both houses of Congress in the midterm elections. Among the legislative achievements they hope to benefit from are the Infrastructure and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act. …

By Samuel Harasimowicz | kvia.com

UPDATE — Special Traffic Investigators continue to investigate after the death of bicyclist.

McCrory was struck from behind around 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Police said moments later a second vehicle was planning on exiting the freeway when he struck the bicyclist who was lying on the ground.

Sneak Peek at Dallas’ Trinity Spine Trail (And New Creekside Park)

By Tim Rogers | www.dmagazine.com

We are about to have 50 acres of awesomeness in East Dallas.

Yesterday morning I went on a little adventure with some folks I work with, led by a fellow with shaved legs named Philip Hiatt Haigh. P2H is a serious cyclist, which (partly) explains the silky smooth gams. He’s also the executive director of the Circuit Trail Conservancy, the folks building The LOOP, a 50-mile paved trail around Dallas. So when P2H asked if we wanted to come have a look at part of The LOOP called the Spine Trail before it officially opens, we loaded up our bikes.

A few details to bear in mind: Matt Goodman, our online editorial director, is from Houston. Also, he doesn’t own a bike. P2H owns about 17 bikes, so he brought one for Matt to use. It had a basket on front.

Elizabeth Lavin, our staff photographer, didn’t have a bike until a couple of …

Killeen police investigate a fatal bicycle crash

www.kwtx.com

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – The Killeen Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving a bicyclist Friday evening.

Officers responded at 7:39 p.m. Nov. 4 to a call in reference to a crash involving a bicycle and a car near the intersection of Florence Road and Brookway Drive.

Upon the officers’ arrival, they located an unresponsive man lying in the roadway and attempted to perform life saving measures until paramedics arrived on scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a white Lincoln MKZ was traveling northbound on Florence Road when the bicyclist that was traveling southbound on the northbound shoulder, suddenly turned and entered the roadway in front of the sedan.

Claborn Joiner, 47, died from his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Gregory Johnson at 8:22 p.m. …

Sprockets Bicycle Shop announces closure

by Kaitlynn Hutchins | www.ntdaily.com

Sprockets Bicycle Shop, known for its “customer service manager” Kitsuné Doge, a Shiba Inu who frequents the store, has served the Denton community for a decade.

Located just off the square on West Hickory Street, Sprockets aims to provide affordable, high-quality bicycle sales and service. The business became a part of the local landscape when it opened in August 2011, but at the end of this year, Sprockets will close its doors permanently.

Sprockets announced their official closing date on Facebook on Oct. 19.

Owner and university alumnus Brandon Dupré said the shop hit its peak in the years leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic. Up until 2020, the store’s primary customer base was college students, so once lockdowns and online classes started there was less of a need for bike service. During this time, however, the customer base shifted from college students who needed bikes to commute to …

Day 33: Kerrville to Johnson City: Still more hills and a friendly lunch Friday November 4, 2022, 71 miles (114 km) – Total so far: 1,648 miles (2,652 km) A nice ride today. Favorable winds (my friend Liz said on the phone, “Welcome to windy Fredericksburg!”) mostly quiet back country roads, temps in the 70s to low 80s, and the beauty of the Hill Country continued. We had a very steep climb right out of Kerrville, then rolled along a plateau most of the way to Fredericksburg. We were lucky to find Liz and Howie at home, and they treated us to lunch downtown at the Western Edge Cafe. Great to catch up on their doings since they moved back to Texas a year ago. Then we had a long ride over many rolling hills to Johnson City. We noticed the form of …
