About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

“Normal” Bike Ride, Local Legend Reclaimed

Texbiker.net Posted on July 2, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJuly 2, 2024

A “normal” bike ride on my Canyon Endurace CF bike over to FM2100 south of Huffman. I rolled out at 9:39 AM and it was already nearing 90 degrees. Thankfully the humidity was “only” 67% and I didn’t start sweating until around 3 miles into what turned out to be a 35.31 mile ride. After finishing at 12:20 PM I saw a notice from Strava that I regained the Local Legend on Lake Houston Bridge – EB (5:29). That one is hard to keep because of the many cyclists riding that segment. My 32 times over the last 90 days probably won’t last long. I’m not the fastest but most active for now. Today was the 11th ride on the Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route in 2024. The local legend segment is in other routes as well. My legs felt powerful today. I thank God for my health and safety while biking.

Weather: Start 88 degrees, humidity 67%, dew point 75.5, cloud cover 16%, wind W 6 mph; Finish 92 degrees, humidity 57%, dew point 74.6, partly cloudy, wind W 4 mph.

Main Street gets ready for Star Spangled Spectacular

By Vandy Van Epps | gonzalesinquirer.com

The red, white and blue spirit of the United States is back for the annual Main Street Star Spangled Spectacular Thursday, July 4.

Main Street Director Tiffany Hutchinson-Padilla said seven food and drink vendors and six merchandise vendors are ready for this year’s Fourth of July celebration.

“Our entertainment will include DJ Buddy, who starts at 5 p.m.; John Brewer will start at 7 p.m.; and then Dawson DeBord will be at 8:30 p.m. We do have the VFW Post #4817. They’re going to be hosting the patriotic bike parade,” Hutchinson-Padilla said.

“They’ll have free bikes for the winners and they usually judge based on the decorating of the wagon or the scooter or the bike — it doesn’t just have to be a bike,” Hutchinson-Padilla said. …

TxDOT asking for feedback on record $104 billion 10-year plan

Derrick Stuckly | www.brownwoodnews.com

To help keep a thriving Texas economy moving, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is drafting a record-breaking 10-year transportation plan, and the public is invited to weigh in on potential projects in communities across the state.

The draft 2025 Unified Transportation Program (UTP) proposes $104.2 billion in transportation spending, making it the second year in a row that the UTP plan exceeds $100 billion.

The UTP provides a road map to help develop projects around Texas to improve safety, address congestion and connectivity, and preserve roadways for Texas drivers. The UTP also addresses public transportation, maritime, aviation, rail, freight and international trade, and bicycle and pedestrian connectivity. TxDOT works with its transportation partners to identify projects to be included in the UTP and updates it every year. …

Houston no longer has a bike share network. Will another one be launched?

Adam Zuvanich | www.houstonpublicmedia.org

Houston’s bike-sharing future is up in the air after Houston BCycle shuttered Sunday, ending its 12-year run.

Sallie Alcorn said she can recall a sense of excitement at City Hall in 2012 when Houston’s leaders launched a bike-sharing network to serve the downtown area.

Now in her second term as an at-large city council member, Alcorn was a city staffer at the time and was quick to take advantage of a transportation option that was both new and promising for a historically car-centric city where traffic jams and parking lots could be considered part of the culture.

"I remember my first trip. I had to take something over …

Not A Sprint Finish Like Stage 3 TdF: New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst

Texbiker.net Posted on July 1, 2024 by Rick AnkrumJuly 1, 2024

July arrived marking half way through 2024. I rode north following my New Caney – Roman Forest Blvd – Oakhurst route. It began at 9:35 AM after I paused stage 3 of the TdF 4 hours and 35 minutes into the broadcast. I’m watching on Peacock. The heat of the day had not arrived with “only” 86 degrees as I set out on my Cervelo Caledonia bike. This was the 8th ride on this route but I varied the streets enough that Strava didn’t match any of those rides. My goal for July is 930 miles which equates to 30 miles every day. Today I put a few miles in the bank riding 35.04. This routes averages just over that so far this year. The pace wasn’t fast but steady. My legs felt good and the wind was under 10 mph but changed direction from the west to the northeast by the 12:20 PM finish. I thank God for my health and strength to ride and watching over me on the roads.

About to make the u-turn at Roman Forest Blvd under US59
