About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Day 21 Marfa: Lonesome day

Friday October 14, 2022, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,225 miles (1,971 km) Today it’s my turn to cook with Jack as assistant chef. This means I have to reach camp in Marfa between 2 and 3 pm, to give enough time to put up my tent, get a shower and go off to the supermarket with Ankur to buy provisions for the evening meal and breakfast. It’s a 74 mile ride mainly uphill and a headwind that may get worse as the day goes on, so could be a challenge. I’m getting the hang of different time zones, sunrise today will be at 8 am, when we started off on West Coast time it was 6 am. A rough calculation of cycling time meant that I had to be away just before sunrise so I was up at 6:30 packing everything to get breakfast just after seven, sort myself out and be away.

I left camp by myself and expected to be by myself all day since I seem to be the fastest rider in the group. It was great to be out on the road early, watching the sun come up over the mountains. Highway 90 was ever so quiet. I love this type of cycling, an open range with …

Day 21: Van Horn, TX to Marfa, TX

Saturday October 15, 2022, 74 miles (119 km) – Total so far: 1,140 miles (1,835 km) Today was a mental and physical challenge. Our second day in a row of more than 70 miles and our seventh day of riding without a rest.

We awoke to nice weather and the first 10 or so miles was pretty good. Then we started a long shallow climb of about 1000 feet over 50 miles. Normally that wouldn’t even be noticeable but there were headwinds of about 10 mph as well. There was some scenery but no services at all along the way today. So one of our leaders set up a water stop at mile 38. It turns out that there is a tiny library that was funded by Carl Rove in Valentine, TX (population 134). We stopped and …

Revisited Wooden Bridges, West Fork High School

Texbiker.net Posted on October 16, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 16, 2022

It is a good thing I didn’t ride to Town Center Park in Kingwood today because it was filled with the semi-annual car show. I didn’t remember the show was happening until after I started biking. I chose my Forest Cove – Oakhurst – Kingwood route for the third time this year. I started riding at 1:17 PM after getting home from church. Since it was Sunday I rode my Lynskey Helix bike. The ride went through several Kingwood villages before I made it to the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway, Hamblen Road, Sorters Road, Northpark Drive, and into Oakhurst. Exiting Oakhurst onto the southbound US59 frontage road I made the u-turn at Northpark Drive, north on the frontage road, right on E. Knox Street and then into Woodridge Forest. At the 2:52 PM finish I rode 20.29 miles. My week ended with 235.9 miles, and 119 miles away from my 651 mile goal for the month. Six weeks in a row of 200+ miles.

Today’s weather summary for the ride: start 87 (humidity 53%, dew point 68), partly cloudy, wind S 7 mph; finish 90 (humidity 45%, dew point 66), partly cloudy, wind N 0 mph.

I was on a bike each day of the week. I rode my Cervelo bike on 4 rides and 3 times on the Lynskey bike. The average ride distance was 33.7 miles. No route was done more than once.

Day 20 Van Horn: Roll of the dice

Thursday October 13, 2022, 75 miles (121 km) – Total so far: 1,151 miles (1,852 km) Another new day but a change of direction and conditions. For the last four days I’ve been following the route of the Rio Grande. The river seems like an old friend who I followed and watched over many a mile. Today we say goodbye then climb out of the valley where it runs. We also enter another time zone and lose another hour. So last chance to enjoy a few things but new horizons to explore.

The route from Fort Hancock went out into the wilderness with the road winding its way through acres and acres of creosote bushes and rough pasture. No more cotton or pecan trees but cattle country. My bad experience of El Paso was well behind me and I am starting to enjoy Texas. …

Ghost bike memorials to honor two slain Houston bicyclists whose deaths remain unsolved

Jonathan Limehouse | www.houstonchronicle.com

Ghost bike memorials created over the weekend will honor two Houston bicyclists struck by vehicles this year whose deaths remain unsolved.

Sajid Barajas, a 47-year-old immigrant, died around 2:15 a.m. May 30 after a white Nissan Altima hit him from behind while he was riding his bicycle in the 300 block of South Cesar Chavez Boulevard near Rusk, Houston police said. Barajas died after the impact from the collision threw him onto the road, near a railroad track. The driver of the suspect vehicle remains at large. …

Adding Some PSI Makes A Difference

Texbiker.net Posted on October 15, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 15, 2022

Airing up the Cervelo Caledonia’s tire before today’s bike ride made it seem easier to roll. I should’ve done it a few rides ago. When I put the pump connector on and made the first pump the gauge showed about 40 psi and I aired them up to 80 psi. I felt energized while pedaling. A downside is the bumps and cracks are more noticeable but as many times as I ride this route I know where most of them are and compensate. I’m not glued to the saddle.

I started earlier than the other bike rides this week with the Cervelo’s wheels down at 9:18 to ride my usual Saturday route, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden. The temperature delayed my start by about 45 minutes while I waited for it to get above 70 from the 61 when I got up. Then I over dressed a little wearing a long sleeve poly T-shirt under my Texbiker.net short sleeve jersey but I was okay when I finished at 11:59 AM. In the shade I wasn’t too hot.

Along the ride I saw some other cyclists with the first one in Kingwood Greens then three on Kings River Drive and the last group on Old Atascocita Road east of FM 2100. There were 2 cars at the church on Fairlake Lane with bike racks making me think at least more were in the area.

Weather conditions: start 72 (humidity 90%, dew point 68), mostly cloudy, wind S 4 mph; finish 86 (humidity 52%, dew point 67), partly cloudy, wind S 9 mph. Great weather for a bike ride once it warmed up. Lots of sun.

Before the bike ride I was at 182 miles for the week and today’s 33.42 miles pushed the week to 215.61 miles. This was the 22nd time I rode this route in 2022. Today’s mileage was about average for the previous 21. October totals’ 511.78 miles. I am 140 miles away from my goal for October.

Gearing data from AXS.SRAM.com ride report: total moving time 2:41:04, 35×13 time 1:29:01 (21.5 miles), 35×15 time 39:12 (7.9 miles), 37 RD shifts.
