About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Back To Saturday’s Route, Almost Crashed, Other Cyclists

Texbiker.net Posted on October 8, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 8, 2022

The last two Saturdays I rode organized rides but today I was back to my usual Saturday route around home, Atascocita – Huffman – Walden. I could’ve started a little earlier than I did but I waited for the temperature to get to 70. during that wait I watched stage 2 of the Tour de Romandie Feminin, some of the Il Lombardia race, and ate breakfast. Once the temperature approached 70 I got ready to ride. I rode my Cervelo Caledonia bike and pushed the start button on the Bolt computer at 9:07 AM. The sun was shining and the wind was light from the NE at 7 mph. I hoped to see other cyclists but wondered if my late start would mean they finished before I passed them. Not to worry though, I saw a number of cyclists starting on W. Lake Houston Parkway at Kings Harbor. I needed 13 miles to reach a 200+ mile week and biked 33.02 miles by the time I finished at 11:40 AM making it 220 miles for the week. This is the 5th week in a row at 200+ miles. I have to go places tomorrow so I won’t have time to ride. 21 times I’ve rode this route in 2022.

I almost crashed on Kings River Drive by the pool. I’m not sure what happened but I was trying to take video of a passing cyclist and lost control of the Cervelo for a couple of seconds. I managed to not go down swerving widely back and forth, thank goodness. Maybe I tried to take the GoPro out of the mount before it was turned to the right position?

On the east side of Lake Houston I saw a number of other cyclists starting at the church on Fairlake Lane and onto FM 2100.

Weather for the bike ride: start 70 (humidity 64%, dew point 58), a few clouds, wind NE 7 mph; finish 83 (humidity 45%, dew point 60), a few clouds, wind E 10 mph. I thought about wearing a long sleeve poly T-shirt instead of arm sleeves but decided it would warm up as the sun got higher. Good choice though it was cool until I warmed up.

Comment on bike plan, land-use plan at an upcoming workshop

By Renee Umsted | lakewood.advocatemag.com

The City of Dallas is asking for public input on updates to the bike plan and land-use plan.

The ForwardDallas Comprehensive Plan sets guidelines for how public and private land should be used. Since April 2021, when the plan was launched, there have been several opportunities for community members to share their input, including facilitated workshops, surveys, community and stakeholder events, and interactive comments.

The Department of Planning and Urban Design is leading the process, and staff members have grouped the feedback received so far into major categories: mobility and connectivity; housing choice and quality; environmental quality; development process and planning; environmental justice; economic development and revitalization; neighborhood stability; community design and complete neighborhoods; and quality of life.

Houston Parks Board Resumes Construction on San Jacinto Bayou Greenway Project

from Mayor Pro Tem Martin’s October 2022 Newsletter

Construction has resumed on the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway along the West Fork of the San Jacinto River between Woodland Hills Drive and Laurel Springs Lane. Once fully complete the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway will stretch for approximately 2.5 miles. The Houston Parks Board had previously completed the section of greenway from Woodland Hills to Burning Tree Court. The project was paused until the completion of the Forest Cove Townhomes demolition which was finished in September.

Notable features of the San Jacinto Bayou Greenway include:

New off-street trails as well as the use of existing streets for the trail system
Trail connection for Kingwood residents at Woodland Hills Drive to access the greenway
Parking for greenway users within the former Riverview Townhomes Community
Planting of native trees, meadows, and wildflowers
Benches and seating areas
Interpretive and directional signage
Trash cans and recycling containers

Construction is expected to take 3 months, weather permitting. During construction, the public should not enter areas surrounded by orange caution fencing.

Once construction is completed, Houston Parks Board will continue maintenance of San Jacinto Bayou Greenway, which includes weekly trash pickup, bi-weekly mowing of grass along the trail, upkeep of the trail and amenities, and any necessary flood cleanup.

San Jacinto Bayou Greenway will connect into and through Harris County Precinct 3’s Edgewater Park, currently in development, to the Spring Creek and Cypress Creek trail systems, also operated by Precinct 3.

San Jacinto Bayou Greenway is one of nine bayous being transformed as part of Bayou Greenways 2020, a public-private partnership between the nonprofit Houston Parks Board, the City of Houston, and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department. The initiative is implemented in close collaboration with the Harris County Flood Control District, which manages the county’s bayous and creeks for drainage and flood risk reduction. Bayou Greenways 2020 will transform 3,000 acres of underutilized land along nine major waterways and create a 150-mile network of connected parks and trails along Houston’s major waterways.

To see a map of the planned greenway route, click here. For more information, please visit the West Fork of the San Jacinto webpage, or contact the Houston Parks Board at 713-942-8500.

After yearslong cycling trip across the country, 20 women make it to Yorktown

By Sian Wilkerson | www.dailypress.com

YORKTOWN — It was a gloomy Wednesday afternoon in Yorktown as a group of 20 women cycled to the end of a cross-country journey.

The feeling of relief was almost palpable as the cyclists rounded the corner onto Main Street and caught sight of the finish line that signified the end of their long journey. As the tired women trickled in, a handful of family members stood by with balloons and signs, cheering as the women came to a stop in front of the Yorktown Victory Monument.

“You did it!” echoed across the lawn as the women disembarked their bikes and gathered to slap hands and bump fists in congratulations. Glasses of champagne and cookies adorned with Nutella and raspberries were passed out to the participants as they gathered under the monument for photo ops. …

… One woman who finished all four legs of the journey was Gail Vanderlee from Midland, Texas, who admitted that it wasn’t exactly an easy feat to accomplish.

“It was a hard journey,” she said. “It was definitely not a vacation.” …

Day 30: Austin TX to La Grange TX

Friday October 7, 2022 87 miles(yep some of us got a tad lost leaving Austin) in high 80 temps. Cycled on decent roads from Austin to Cedar Creek to Bastrop. It was a breath of fresh air to bike thru’ farmlands and woodlands. Sadly we encountered some vicious chasing dogs. They are our nemesis. I saw some unusual cattle with humps on their backs. From Bastrop we biked 15 miles right through the heart of Bastrop State Park which adjoins Buescher State Park. I felt like I was cycling thru’ Myles Standish State Park (Our ol’ stompin’ ground in MA) except the hills in Myles Standish are like …

Video: Houston actress claims she was attacked by unleashed dog on NW Harris Co. bike trail

Bryce Newberry | www.click2houston.com

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Saturday was the first time Dreah Marie rode her bike through the MUD 155 Parks and Trails system in Northwest Harris County.

She chose the spot, she said, to be a little less congested.

But, what happened when she turned around on her bike to head back to her car is what made her decide she was not ready to return anytime soon.

“The dog came after me, barking very violently, and then that’s when he bit me on my leg,” Marie said.

She shared photos with KPRC 2 that show the injury. …

Groovy Bike Ride But Not The Kind I Like

Texbiker.net Posted on October 7, 2022 by Rick AnkrumOctober 7, 2022

I was in for a surprise on today’s bike ride. The ride began at 10:15 AM, about 30 minutes earlier than yesterday. As I was getting ready I went over the route in my mind deciding which streets to include as I rode my Lynskey Helix bike. I decided to bike my Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst route going to the north and then to the northwest. The surprise came on FM 1314 about 1/2 mile NW of Valley Ranch Parkway. Before that point I noticed a lot of black residue on the shoulder and wondered what it was from. Not too long after that I found the answer: workers had ground off a layer or more of asphalt on the main lanes and the shoulder. This left grooves and bumps on the shoulder causing me to dodge around them or find smooth places. I turned right onto Fatheree Drive to get away from the rough road, rode by Porter High School and back to FM 1314 where it was concrete. From there to Cumberland the concrete road was much smoother. This repeated on the way back towards Porter east of River Walk where the road is asphalt but the grooves and clumps of asphalt seemed worse. I could’ve biked on Old Sorters Road to avoid some of the roughness but it has it’s own bumpy surface.

This route is a new one I came up with in 2022 though the streets are used in other routes. Today I rode 35.81 miles, longer than the previous 6 rides. I rode the Lynskey Helix bike 5 of the 7 times. I am within 13 miles of reaching 200 for the week. I finished the ride at 12:56 PM.

Before leaving on the bike ride I watched stage 1 of the Tour de Romandie Feminin on GCN+. The women were battling for the win. Beautiful scenery.

Weather conditions for my bike ride: start 77 (humidity 68%, dew point 66), mostly cloudy, wind NW 8 mph; finish 86 (humidity 42%, dew point 60), mostly cloudy, wind W 7 mph. The headwind riding to Cumberland on FM 1314 seemed stronger than 7 mph but my legs were up to the challenge. Making the u-turn to ride back to Old Sorters Road the former headwind now tailwind helped me bump up my overall average speed to 14.1 mph. Gear usage data from my AXS.SRAM.com ride report below.
