About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

A Bike Change And Construction Progress

Texbiker.net Posted on September 27, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 27, 2022

To change things up a little I rode my Lynskey Helix on today’s bike ride. I normally ride my Cervelo on Tuesdays. I rolled out at 9:38 AM to ride my Atascocita – Walden – Huffman route planning on riding around 33 miles and ended up at 35.49 miles because I added going south on FM 2100 to Spanish Cove Drive before turning north to Huffman. I am well over my 720 mile goal for September with 924.72 miles and 3 more days to bike.

During the night the cool front arrived and around 7:30 this morning it was 57 degrees at my home weather station. I wasn’t in a big hurry to ride until it warmed up some so I did some yard work on the invasive plants I’ve been getting rid of. The while I ate breakfast I watched the Tour of Croatia until about 40 km left which I’ll watch after the ride. The cooler weather will be around for the rest of the week. I registered for the Pineywoods Purgatory bike ride on Saturday in Lufkin and I hope it warms up by then.

A bit of good news on the FM 1960 road construction. The crossover at Pinehurst Trail Drive has moved south about 50 feet with the new lanes now in use. At Atascocita Shores Drive workers were laying rebar in preparation for concrete pouring. They usually don’t wait too long after that to pour concrete if the weather cooperates.

Weather while I rode today: start 74 (humidity 52%, dew point 56), mostly clear, wind N 6 mph; finish 84 (humidity 35%, dew point 53), clear, wind NE 11 mph. I might need to start wearing the long sleeve T-shirts from spring time. It has been many months since we hit 57 degrees in the morning.

The AXS.SRAM ride report data from the bike ride.

While I was out riding Strava sent me an alert that I lost the local legend for the north bound segment over the river on W. Lake Houston Parkway. Since the route was going that way I may have tied the cyclist who took the title from me.

‘A long road ahead’: Constant construction wreaks havoc on downtown businesses

Eric Killelea, Megan Stringer | www.expressnews.com

Since it was founded in 1948, Herweck’s has survived the disruption of many construction cycles — it’s one of the challenges of a location on a busy downtown corner.

But the art supply store’s owner isn’t sure it will survive this one.

“We’re looking at construction everywhere you’re trying to drive downtown,” Scott Rote said of his store, whose front entrance is separated by a high chain link fence from a construction site on Broadway Street — which has been closed for over a year. “A lot of people say, ‘I don’t want to go down here. It’s too difficult.’”

Herweck’s isn’t alone in such struggles.

On North Main Avenue, the owner of Charles A. James Bicycle Shop has been lodging complaints with the city over street parking in the area, much of which has been displaced during a street reconstruction project slated to wrap up by 2024. …

… A tale of two businesses

The loss of parking on North Main has been a challenge for Charles A. James Bicycle Shop . Its customers have been riding or carrying their bikes for several blocks to get to the store, its front entrance hidden behind tall fences.

Established in 1920, the oldest bike shop in San Antonio has suffered a sudden 40 percent drop in monthly revenue since the Weston Urban tower’s construction began this year, its owner said. The staff even started a GoFundMe page to raise money to help pay bills.

“Right now, I’m living …

Posting from her hospital bed, Matthews said on Instagram: “A car turn [sic] into me and bashed me up.” …

Another San Antonio cyclist killed in hit-and-run on Old Highway 90

Steven Santana | www.mysanantonio.com

Police are investigating another cyclist that was struck and killed by a vehicle early Monday morning, September 26, while he was riding his bike on the side of the road at the 6100 block of Old Highway 90. A San Antonio police sergeant at the scene said that the man, believed to be in his 50s, was riding his bike in the grass on the side of the road when an unidentified vehicle struck the man and then fled the scene.

The San Antonio Police Department said that there were no witnesses to the hit-and-run and that the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The traffic investigations detail is looking into the case. A preliminary report from SAPD said the man’s next of kin have yet to be notified.

Day 19: Sierra Blanca to Van Horn TX

Monday September 26, 2022 35 miles today on Route Business 80, was wonderful as 4 cars passed me on a 25 mile stretch. Once I entered I90 every 18 wheeler was out delivering. Strong headwinds were the topic of conversation when we got to Van Horn campground. They blew hard making downhills feel like uphills. Super nice to have a shorter distance day. Dropped into Asians Cafe for a latte. Talked to Ron who hailed from Maine. Our leaders brought us pizzas and we enjoyed food whilst reminding ourselves of our greater purpose – to raise monies and awareness of MS patients and their challenges. …

We Interrupt This Bike Ride With Breaking News!

Texbiker.net Posted on September 26, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 26, 2022

No news bumper music to announce about 1.2 miles into the bike ride I got a flat tire. I wasn’t even warmed up yet but as I rode across Woodbridge Drive the rear tire felt soft and I stopped to check. I squeezed it and it was very soft. Fortunately I could my home from there and I rode back to fix the flat in the comfort of my own driveway shade and chair. Rotating the rear tire I couldn’t find anything sticking out of the tire. I put the Cervelo in my workstand, removed the rear tire and looked again but couldn’t find anything. Moving to my chair I tried to get the tire bead loose from the Alpha 50 rim but it wouldn’t budge with my thumbs or the plastic tire tools. I got a blade screwdriver and nudged the tire bead into the center of the rim and used the tire tool to move the bead out of the rim, a job I thought would be hard since it was very hard to get the bead into the rim originally when I first mounted the tire for the new Cervelo. Using my floor pump I aired up the tube but still couldn’t find the hole but adding more air I slowly rotated the tube and found a tiny hole. I roughed up the tube with sandpaper from the patch kit and then began searching the inside of the tire for the cause. I found a couple of tiny pieces of glass sticking on the outside but they didn’t protrude inside. Slowly moving my finger around the inside of the tire I found the tiny piece of wire sticking up. It was so small I couldn’t pull it out with my fingers so I used a small pliers. It was so small it was hard to see but I could sure feel it.

With the tube roughed up I marked the hole and opened the patch kit from my seat bag. The glue was dried up. Another reason I was glad this happened near home. I got a new patch kit out of my parts bin and applied the glue. I’m not the best at patching tubes, it seems I miss the hole sometimes but this time I got the patch over the hole. I aired up the tube to check my work, no leak and inserted it back in the tire. Since I had such a hard time mounting the tire when it was new I thought it would hard but it went on went out too much effort. I aired up the tire, put it back on the Cervelo and resumed the bike ride about 35 minutes after I stopped to fix it. This was the first flat on my Cervelo Caledonia bike since I bought it in February. So I’ve had a flat on each bike now. I biked almost 4723 miles before getting this flat on the Cervelo.

Now I was headed on my original route, New Caney – Tavola – Valley Ranch, planning on riding some different streets in Tavola. I wasn’t sure of the distance because of the different streets but I thought it might be 35 miles. It turned out to be 37.8 miles, a few hundredths of a mile longer than the previous high. This was the 13th ride on this route in 2022. I show the new streets in the video. Tavola is expanding with many houses under construction. I rode gingerly through the work areas hoping to avoid nails.

9-26-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney-Tavola-Valley Ranch Route
9-26-2022 YTD Bike Rides New Caney-Tavola-Valley Ranch Route

Getting to Tavola I rode into a stout headwind despite the weather showing the wind to be calm at the start. I think the approaching cool front stirred it up. That turned it into a nice tailwind for the ride back to Kingwood and my speed increased significantly making up a little of the time I lost fixing the flat. I finished the ride at 1:03 PM. Weather conditions: start 78 (humidity 76%, dew point 70), mostly clear, wind calm: finish 87 (humidity 57%, dew point 70), a few clouds, wind N 10 mph gusts 16 mph.

Below is the cadence details chart for the ride. I find this more interesting than watts and heart rate.

This year, the theme for Síclovía was mind, spirit and body.

Thousands of people played on the streets of downtown San Antonio Sunday morning for the 20th Síclovía.

Bikers, skaters and dog walkers all enjoyed a new route that goes through three downtown parks.

One rider said she liked the new route because it passes through San Antonio’s gay district.

“The pride. You know like the bars and stuff. That was cool to see,” she said.

This year the theme for Síclovía was mind, spirit and body. Veronica Wong-Rizo, with the YMCA of Greater San Antonio, said the focus was how mental health relates to our physical health.

“Because of the pandemic, I think people are suffering from not being out socializing. Depression is big …

Day 18: El Paso to Sierra Blanca

Sunday September 25, 2022 84 miles on mainly flat roads with a high of 85°. Spent the first 40 miles stopping at little grocery stores trying to locate some coffee without success yikes!!! The mountain ranges were ever present, so far, here in Texas country. The. Malone, Quitman and Sierra Blanca mountains dominated the landscape on both sides. Again we were gifted with roads lined with rows of Pecan trees and acres of cotton plants. I delight in experiencing the "movie like" entrances to ranches. Routes 76, 20, 192 and 34 were sparsely used by vehicles which contributed to a pleasant ride. This evening we stay in a …
