About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Cooking In Late September Heat Biking In Kingwood

Texbiker.net Posted on September 25, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 25, 2022

I biked each day this week wrapping with today’s ride on Kingwood streets. I started after getting home from church at 1:25 PM on my Lynskey Helix bike. Changing the route some I rode on streets that were new to me in Kings Point, River Bend, Woodspring Forest and Woodstream for a total of 21.33 miles. I guessed it would be less than that though. The miles brought my week’s total to 246.16 miles and September to 851.42 miles. This was the second highest week dating back to the week beginning July 4th.

9-25-2022 Week Ending 9-25-2022 Bike Rides Summary
9-25-2022 Week Ending 9-25-2022 Bike Rides Summary

It has been extra hot for September and starting the ride at 1:25 PM it was 93 and when I finished at 3:17 PM it was 95. Thankfully while it was hot the humidity was low at 40% and then 36% when I ended the ride. There some people outside on their bikes so the heat did not deter them either. Monday a front should pass through lowering the high temperatures into the 80’s and lows in the 60″s.

Biking Kingwood streets I don’t try to go as fast or change gears like I do on extended rides.

This professional cyclist from Fort Worth made history in France this summer. Here’s how By Hollace Ava Weiner

By Hollace Ava Weiner | www.star-telegram.com

Fort Worth made sports history this summer when the only Texan racing in the reborn women’s Tour de France was Emily Van Dyken Newsom, a TCU alum, classical pianist, and product of the local Trinity Trails. Newsom, who commutes around town on a canary yellow Cannondale bicycle, was among six American riders in the 642-mile race. The competition began in Paris on July 24, the same day the men’s Tour de France ended, and concluded eight days later at a summit in the Vosges Mountains. “Everything about it was incredible,” says Newsom, 39, an Alamo Heights mom who …

Opinion: Approve Dallas trail funding

By Philip Hiatt Haigh | www.dallasnews.com

As trail use grows, so should city’s maintenance budget.

Dallas stands apart when you travel by trail.

Take a family bike ride along Northaven Trail, where an inflatable movie screen and projector show movies at dusk on summer nights.

Stroll down SoPac Trail and walk past the buzzing activity of a pollinator garden, blossoming with wildflowers, a stop for monarch butterflies on their migratory path.

There’s always the iconic watering hole where you can jump off Katy Trail to grab an ice-cold beverage and continue to Victory Park and Downtown.

At Trinity Forest Trail along the Trinity River, the immediate entrance into the forest allows you to reconnect with nature and maybe catch an early morning glimpse of an owl gliding through the trees.

Pocket parks, pollinator gardens, murals and movie nights create unique experiences offered along …

My Souther Tier Bike Dream

Day 17: Las Cruces New Mexico to El Paso Texas

Saturday September 24, 2022 67 miles today with low 90s temps. Route 28 and 186 were beautiful to ride on. They were lined with the most gorgeous pecan trees and cotton plants. The shade was wonderful for the first 2 hours. The route took me past many beautiful ranches. My favorite activity-I managed to stop three times for coffee and chat to locals. I met many individual and Peloton cyclists. I was envious of their TT bikes. These roads are perfect for Saturday morning cycling groups. We took the Anthony Gap alternate route up 186 to 404-213 because allegedly it has less traffic than the main route into El paso. Our route turned onto …

GTX Trails Dig Day 10.16 @ 9am

By BRAZOS1845 | austinmountainbiking.com

Come out and build some sweet new singletrack with Georgetown Trails Foundation on October 16th at 9am. Meet at Chautauqua Park, where we will be extending a new segment that flows alongside the rocky bluffs of the San Gabriel River’s South Fork. We’ve got plenty of spare tools – just bring gloves, water, and some sturdy shoes. Should be a fun time!

Rollin’ Pearland Bike Ride

Texbiker.net Posted on September 24, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 24, 2022

I got up this morning at 4:15 AM to get ready to drive to Pearland about 40 miles south of my house. I registered for the Rollin’ Pearland bike ride that started at 7 AM and I wanted to get there a little earlier to pickup my registration packet. I backed the Jeep out of the driveway about 5:35 AM and proceeded to US59. I made good time until on SH 288 at I-610 the freeway was shut down except for 1 lane due to what appeared to be a one vehicle crash. I thought this might mean I wouldn’t get to the starting location in time to roll out but traffic slowly moved through the area and I was back up to speed. I pulled into The Sports Complex 13050 Shadow Creek Parkway in Pearland. It was a good thing I wasn’t any later because the parking lots were almost full. I found a spot and went to get my packet. On the way back to my Jeep I talked with another biker and remarked about how many cyclists were there. He told me the organizer called him on Tuesday to get more rider packets. They had thought 150 would be there but it looked more like 400 or more.

After announcements the 60 and 40 mile A group riders started. I wasn’t in the A group but I started with them to get ahead of the others and my ride started at 7:22 AM. Sunrise was past and the sky was full of sun, wind was light and the temperature was 75. Great weather for a bike ride. Photos at the starting area before the ride began.

The 40 mile route was actually 43 miles according to RideWithGPS.com. I had loaded the route on my Bolt computer yesterday for turn-by-turn directions which worked perfectly during the ride though I made a wrong turn on the way back at SH 6 but I quickly corrected it and was back on course.

As I was riding along in the early miles not thinking about much another cyclist pulled up beside me and called my name. It was Jeff, a friend of another friend, Jodi. Jodi had told me Jeff might do the ride but with all of the people I didn’t expect to see him. He actually had sent me a text before the ride started but I didn’t see it. We rode together and chatted until the 60 mile route split from the 40 mile route. It was great to have a riding buddy to talk to.

As you can see on the route map below the ride went south and east before turning back and riding on some of the same roads. Before the 40 mile route turn I noticed some roads from a ride I did earlier this year in Alvin. I rode by the Freedom Field Stadium that it started at today. Being this close to the coast the ride was flat with no railroad overpasses. I think the steepest place in the ride was on Iowa Colony Blvd. riding over some railroad tracks near SH 6. We rode over that going both directions.

The roads were good and the riders spread out after the opening miles. Pearland Police and other officers were at major intersections at the beginning and later when we returned. A few roads were well used farm roads with irregular surfaces but not a problem riding on.

When I returned to the starting point there was even more going on with soccer games on 3 or 5 fields. Cars were cruising the parking lots looking for spaces. I was back at the start line and finished at 10:23 AM thanks to a very strong 15.7 mph average speed.

From the AXS.SRAM.com ride report: Total moving time was 2:53:27, riding time using the 35×15 gears 1:12:38 (17.2 miles) and riding time using the 35×13 gears 1:35:01 (25.6 miles). I didn’t change to the 35×13 as soon as I could’ve. I made 29 RD shifts. There were not many traffic stops for the first 35 miles but after that the route was passing through major intersections and red lights though the police usually didn’t make riders wait for the green lights. I shifted to the 35×15 as I approached those.

Austin’s Trail Foundation rebrands and becomes primary steward of beloved Butler Trail

By Brianna Caleri | austin.culturemap.com

The Trail Foundation has been one of the central preservers of Austin’s outdoorsy culture for nearly 20 years, caring for a crucial piece of public land, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail and Boardwalk along Lady Bird Lake. It is the threshold from upper to lower Austin, and an organic gathering place for just about every Austinite at some point in their city life.

On September 22, TTF announced big news that may sound little: The organization formalized its partnership with the City of Austin, and is changing its name to the Trail Conservancy (TTC) to better reflect its new duties. This news happens to come on the heels of the Butler Trail’s 50th anniversary in December of 2021.

The formal partnership means the city is handing over almost all control of the …
