About Texbiker.net

Texbiker.net covers the news, events and resources for those interested in Texas bicycling.

My bicycling passion was rekindled in 1979 with a Huffy bicycle from Woolco. From early rides around my neighborhood my enthusiasm grew to tackle my unsupported first century. From there I discovered organized rides all over Texas, races and mountain bikes. Many bikes and miles later the enthusiasm is still there.

Thanks to my late wife, Hazel Marie, for her support over the many years, miles and rides.

My primary bike is the Cervelo Caledonia Rival AXS below. My titanium bike is the Lynskey Helix titanium. My newest bike is a Canyon Endurace CF 7 Rival eTap.

Reading My Morning Comics Slowed My Start

Texbiker.net Posted on September 23, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 23, 2022

Not a real excuse for starting later than I planned but I was reading my morning list of comics. I used to get an email with them but recently that stopped so now I go to the website which takes a little longer. With that out of the way I started today’s bike ride at 9:42 AM riding my Lynskey Helix bike on my Community Drive – Cumberland – Oakhurst route. The last time I rode my Lynskey bike that direction but not the same route on September 7th I had a flat tire but no such drama on today’s bike ride. That was great. I biked 35.11 miles and improved my week’s total to 181 miles, well within reach of a 200+ mile week. Tomorrow I’m biking the Rollin’ Pearland ride to add that total. Today was the 6th time biking this route in 2022.

9-23-2022 YTD Bike Rides Community Drive-Cumberland-Oakhurst

I altered the route slightly to be sure I rode at least 34 miles adding a longer loop through Brooklyn Trails and lengthening the greenbelt trail section in the first mile.

Summer like weather continues to hang around but I finished at 12:34 PM before the real hot part of the day. Weather conditions: start 82 (humidity 71%, dew point 72), clear, wind N 6 mph; finish 92 (humidity 56%, dew point 74), clear, wind NE 7 mph. With the hot weather I used my CamelBak for hydration on the ride. No need to stop and refill a water bottle.

Crossing over US59 heading to Valley Ranch

The gear choices today were not as lopsided for the ride according to the AXS.SRAM ride report: 1:33:54 for the 35×13 gears and 56:06 turning the 35×15 gears.

I got a 3rd fastest time on Kris Spraggins Memorial Route (2:37) in Strava.

I Was No Where Near Biking That Fast!!

Texbiker.net Posted on September 22, 2022 by Rick AnkrumSeptember 22, 2022

If you watch the video at the end the route is traced out showing that I hit 88 mph as I started to cross Lake Houston. I can assure you I was no where near that fast. I don’t drive my Jeep that fast. Being Thursday I usually bike to the Huffman area and today was no different. I chose the same route name as Tuesday, Atascocita – Walden – Huffman, but I changed a few streets in Kingwood and added the Atascocita Hike & Bike Trail instead of riding on Water Point Trail and other streets east of W. Lake Houston Parkway. This added some distance to the ride and I biked 36.1 miles compared to Tuesday’s 35.39 miles. I rolled out at 9:22 AM and finished at 12:18 PM. I saw two other cyclists, one on Chanay Lane in Kingwood early in the ride and Pete again on Pines Place Drive in Atascocita. Today’s ride put me over my 720 mile goal for the month with 751.21 miles and increased my week total to 145.96 miles. I should be able to ride 200+ miles this week. On Saturday I will bike the Rollin’ Pearland ride on the 43 mile route. Today was the 26th time on this route in 2022. Updating my miles for 2022 I’ve rode 7,486 miles putting me 97 miles ahead of 2021 and 352 miles more than 2020.

The wind picked up during the ride with 16 mph gusts and 8 mph from the north which accounts for the hard effort whenever I had a headwind. Pete commented as we passed about the strong wind. Later today fall arrives but the forecast doesn’t change to reflect that until a front arrives late Monday. Weather during the bike ride: start 82 (humidity 76%, dew point 73), fair, wind NW 4 mph; finish 93 (humidity 50%, dew point 72), fair, wind N 8 mph gusts 16 mph. I stopped at the Exxon station at E. Lake Houston Parkway and FM 1960 to get ice for my water bottle. It was hot enough I should’ve used my CamelBak.

At the Atascocita Shore Drive and FM 1960 construction zone I rode on the asphalt base layer on the way back. Maybe the concrete will be poured soon. You can see what it looks like in the video.

The AXS.SRAM ride report shows 1:41:56 using the 35×13 gears out of riding time of 2:48:05 with 31 RD shifts. I remembered to change to the 35×15 when stopping most of the time.

“Passage of this ordinance today will make our bike lanes safer and help us encourage more connectivity throughout the city,” District 1 City Council member Chad West said at the Sept. 14 meeting.

By Marian Johns | setexasrecord.com

HOUSTON — A bicycle shop in Houston is facing a negligence claim after a customer’s bike allegedly came apart and caused her to suffer serious injuries.

Maureen Parker filed a complaint Sept. 12 in Harris County District Court against Bike Barn LP alleging negligence, liability and violation of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.

Parker alleges in her complaint that she ordered a bike product from the internet and hired Bike Barn to assemble the bike. She claims that on Jan. 16, 2021, the bike came apart while she was riding it which caused her to fall and break her elbow. Parker alleges Bike Barn failed to train or supervise their employee and failed to have safety policies and procedures in place.

She also alleges Bike Barn failed to properly assemble the bike and …

Travis County suspends Thomas Springs Road bicycle safety project

By Katy McAfee | communityimpact.com

Travis County commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 20 to suspend the bicycle safety project along Thomas Springs Road in Southwest Austin.

The decision to suspend the project saves Travis County nearly $7 million.

The project—which was approved by voters in 2017—would have added 6-foot bike lanes on either side of the 1.5-mile road and widened vehicle lanes from 10 to 12 feet. Additionally, construction would have adjusted the road’s center line to improve sight distance, incorporated drainage improvements, enhanced storm water quality, repaved Thomas Springs Road and improved the turn lane design at Hwy. 71.

Though the project was pitched as an effort to increase safety for drivers, bicyclists and …

Before going on a ride, make sure your quick-release skewers are properly tightened.

I can speak from experience when I say that bunny-hopping over a pothole, only to watch your front tire remain on the ground in front of you as you rise up, isn't a fun realization to have.
